Kit reveals are an important ritual for a new season. Here’s my rating of the home and away jerseys of all 20 Premier League teams.

Arsenal

The home jersey pays homage to the Invincibles. The gold Adidas stripes and red trims accentuate the clean design. Black lightning bolts add texture, although a lighter colour might’ve looked better. 4.5/5. The away jersey, is gaudy and striking in equal measure. The stripes, mimicking “the motion of fans”, make it look like a pattern copied from hi-viz shoes. 2.5/5.

Score: 7/10

Aston Villa

Villa’s new crest, a homage to the European Cup winners of 1982, is a winner. The home jersey has a cohesive design; though the “soundwave” pattern could’ve been done better. 3.5/5. The crest-inspired pattern, blue collar line and perforations give the away jersey a lively style. Home and away, the Castore-designed kits complement each perfectly. 4.5/5.

Score: 8/10

Brentford

The black details (collar and cuff) and gradient on the red stripes does not look good, and makes the Bees home jersey “too close” to Sheffield United. Last season’s design was brighter and more pleasant. 2/5. The away jersey is re-used from last season, as Brentford usually do — and kudos to them. The well-placed logo, ribbed collar and darker lettering and cuffs make it very presentable. 4.5/5.

Score: 6.5/10

Bournemouth

The home jersey has perhaps the neatest possible depiction of the Cherries’ traditional colours, with pinstripe detail and grand-dad collar augmenting its cohesive appeal. 4.5/5. Waves, raglan sleeves and dark blue trims integrate nicely into the maritime themed mint-blue away jersey. 4/5.

Score: 8.5/10 :

Brighton and Hove Albion

The v-collar and the upper-half fit of the home jersey make it look like a hairdressing cape. The logo is plastered across and doesn’t blend in, neither do the dark blue sleeve ends. Downgrade from last season. 3/5. Away jersey has neat symmetric design and the colour scheme is better than the fluorescent version of a decade ago it’s modelled on. 3.5/5.

Score: 6.5/10

Burnley

A clean design for the home jersey, the polo collar and subtle texture pattern adding to its classic appeal. 4.5/5. The away jersey is utterly hideous. The worst away jersey this season. 1/5.

Score: 5.5/10

Chelsea

The home jersey builds upon the 1997/98 version in a beautiful way. The colour, the collar, black and gold trim on the cuffs and iridescent logos all adding to its slick appeal. 5/5. ⭐️

Score: 5/5

Crystal Palace

The two-halves design of the home jersey celebrates 10 years in the Premier League for the Eagles. The trims on the collar and cuffs, and silhouette of the original Crystal Palace add to its appeal. 4.5/5. The away jersey features a sash, that is well done, and has a beautiful colour combination to give a neat, minimalistic and royal feel. 4.5/5.

Score: 9/10 👔

Everton

The return of the collar after a decade, Archibald Leitch pattern on the trims, Hummel chevron shoulder tape and spunky Stake logo add to appeal of the home jersey. 4/5. The coral and navy striped away jersey is beautiful. The design elements (collar, shoulder, logos, pattern) have been worked in very cohesively. 5/5. ⭐️

Score: 9/10 👔

Fulham

Despite the contrasting Adidas stripes and one-button Henley collar breaking the monotony, this is still a very basic home jersey. 3/5. The ribbed collar of the away jersey is good but the plain fluorescent pink colour and a sponsor few people know about make it look like one picked straight out of a clearance bin in a discount shop. 2.5/5.

Score: 5.5/10

Luton Town

New entrants to the Premier League, the Hatters also bring with them a different colour for the home jersey. The stylized crew collar and white gradient flash stand out in what is a presentable jersey. 3.5/5. The away jersey is in exact inverse colours — so some credit is due for that. The orange gradient stripe is distracting though. 2.5/5.

Score: 6/10

Liverpool

The home jersey is a nod to the 1974 squad. Neat design, but the sophistication added by the subtle texture is subtracted by the overly prominent white contrast collar and cuffs. 3.5/5. Digitized green graphics give the away jersey a better look than the 95/96 version it’s based on. It’s different, but still looks a printer “test page” output. 2.5/5.

Score: 6/10

Manchester City

The tonal “stripes” inspired by the stadium architecture, and the elegant V-neck with striped rib, give the home jersey a very serene and sophisticated look. White cuff trims would have made it look better. 4.5/5.

Score: 4.5/5

Manchester United

The contrast ribbed crew-neck, black Adidas stripes and inner sides, and a reworked logo to fit two lines gives the home jersey a clean and sophisticated look. Geometric Lancashire rose patterns add to the style. 5/5. ⭐️ The smart crewneck of the away jersey is let down by the plasticky feel, tawdry plastering of the logo, olive green (!) colour, and stripes that look like bandages. 2/5.

Score: 7/10

Newcastle

Traditional stripe design for the home jersey with smart contrast collar and cuffs. The black and white logo fits in nicely for an elegant achromatic look. 4.5/5. The away jersey comes in a rarely seen green colour. The two-tone pattern adds texture while the black/white collar and cuffs tie it back to the Magpies’ traditional colours. Cohesive, different, sporty. 4.5/5.

Score: 9/10 👔

Nottingham Forest

A simple and clean design for the Garibaldi red home jersey, with Adidas stripes returning in a nod to their glory era. No sponsor is named so we don’t know how the design will change with that. 4/5. The sky-blue and wavy design on the away jersey sticks out very oddly and ruins what could’ve been a classic jersey, had straight(er) lines been used. 2/5.

Score: 6/10

Sheffield United

The thick stripes, collar and cuffs give the Errea designed home jersey has a very neat and symmetrical finish — a smart and contemporary take on the Le Coq Sportif 1997–99 version that it’s based on. 4.5/5. Thin woven stripes that come through subtly, and red and black elasticated collar and cuffs make the away jersey a classic. 5/5. ⭐️

Score: 9.5/10 🏆

Tottenham Hotspur

The usual clean design for the home jersey with the trims on the cuff adding contrast in a good way. Not so sure about the linework patterns. On closeup they seem good, but from far, they resemble grubby marks. 3.5/5.

Score: 3.5/5

West Ham

The ribbed v-neckline and cuffs give the home jersey a smart fitted look. Traditional design forms the basis of the appeal; the bubble pattern does not really add anything. 3.5/5. What the ribbed collar and cuff trims add to the away jersey, the iridescent crest and Umbro logo taketh away. Is it good or bad? Budget or sophisticated? Can’t decide. 2.5/5.

Score: 6/10

Wolverhampton Wanderers

The gold colour, logo placements and tapered neck and sleeves give the Wolves home jersey a solid aesthetic baseline, with subtle pinstripes there to break the monotony. 5/5. ⭐️ Away jersey is neatly designed but the Iberia inspired geometric patterns are obscured by the red colour. 3.5/5.

Score: 8.5/10
