A typical “charcutería” in Barcelona, Spain.

New Trends in Tourism

As demonstrated by the Thomas Cook fiasco, the travel industry is moving away from “mass tourism” towards more authentic, unique, immersive experiences. According to Revfine, “Today’s tourists don’t want to be insulated from the places they visit inside a cultural bubble. They want to engage with and participate in the local culture.” This is at the heart of Toureaux’s mission: to connect travelers with local guides and experiences that they’ll never forget.

Toureaux.com’s target customers don’t want to do a bus tour; they’re looking for something else. They don’t want to wait in long lines amid crowds and hear the same pre-recorded audio guide about Antoni Gaudí. They want to be with local residents, sit in mom-and-pop bars, see off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods, and hear personal perspectives of the city. Every offering should be unique.

Enthusiasm from Visitors and Guides

Guides on Toureaux.com love the fact that they can finally show visitors the other side of a city. Smaller group sizes allow visitors to connect better with the guide; the guide can respond to questions that might go beyond the city’s historical facts and important figures. The guide can talk about their personal experiences and day-to-day life living in the city. Maybe, if the guide is feeling comfortable, they can discuss the city’s political situation in a more light fashion. In this sense, each visitor will walk away with a more unique and immersive experience, which has allowed them to truly connect with a local. They’ve also gotten to “peel back the layers” of the city, exposing the core of the city that visitors don’t get to see on a more basic tourist route.

Foodies Delight

A lot of Toureaux’s guides have chosen to focus on creating a more authentic food tour of the city. Take Mick, for example, who has decided to create what he has termed “The Ultimate Foodie Experience”:

“Come join me on a custom-made food tour of Barcelona. A self-proclaimed foodie, I’ll share with you my obsessive knowledge of Catalan cuisine. On this food journey, I’ll make it a point to take you to top-secret epicure hangouts.

Depending on the time of year, we may head to a seasonal food festival, tour a market, stop for tapas, check out a local wine bodega… the options are endless. You’ll also do some sightseeing and learn about the history of the city as we eat our way through the city.

When you click “Request to Book,” you’ll be able to send me a short message outlining your interests and what you’d like to see and do in Barcelona. Carnivore? Vegetarian? Vegan? Wine lover? More of a beer person? Looking for a family-friendly tour? Architecture buff?

Let me know as well if there are any sites you’re itching to see, or if there are ones you’ve already visited. From there, I’ll design a custom-built tour just for you and your fellow travelers.” — Mick, self-proclaimed foodie and host of “The Ultimate Foodie Experience
