Roanoke has grown. A lot, even in the past fifteen years that I’ve lived here. Roanoke, Texas that is, not Roanoke, Virginia. That Roanoke is much larger and much better known than our small little burg.

When I moved here in 2008, the population was hovering around the 5,000 mark. In 2020, we’d doubled already, with an official census population of 10,537. However, even though we’ve doubled in population in these few years, there’s still not a lot here to draw the tourist trade, that’s for sure.

Our official slogan is “The Unique Dining Capital of Texas.” Well, I don’t know how we acquired that name. There certainly are a lot of dining options here. I’ve often joked that I think I could eat at a different place every day and it would take me two months — at least, if not more — to make my way through the list of all the places to eat. However, I doubt if our offerings are unique enough to have people driving in from hours away to come enjoy. But that’s my own personal opinion. And they didn’t ask my opinion before they chose that slogan.

Now that’s not to say that we don’t have anything to offer entertainment wise. We…
