Bigar Waterfall, the Wonder of Nature in the Heart of Banat Mountain

We were recently in Banatul Montan to see its natural wonders and we said that we should definitely visit the Bigar Waterfall, considered one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the world and one of the most photographed. It is, in fact, a symbol of Romania, renowned for its unique beauty.

However, after a part of the waterfall collapsed, the number of tourists decreased and nobody comes here anymore to see it. We were amazed to see that it was just us. Bigar Waterfall is just as beautiful now, you can’t even tell where it collapsed, because the green mosses, on which the water flows, have recovered spectacularly.

So, if you plan, this summer, to visit Banat mountains, do not hesitate and put the famous Bigar Waterfall on your list and it will not disappoint you.

Bigar Waterfall, formed by the Bigar spring, an underground source, is notable for its unique shape and the way the water flows over a rock covered with green moss.

The water springs from a nearby cave and cascades over a limestone tufa rock from a height of 8 meters, forming a spectacular mist curtain. The color of the water varies depending on the season and light, adding a special charm to this natural wonder.

In winter, icicles form over the waterfall, giving the impression that you are looking at a Crystal Palace.

Legend of Bigar Waterfall

Like many picturesque places in Romania, Bigăr Waterfall has a wonderful legend. It is said that long ago, there lived a beautiful girl named Bigăr, who fell in love with a young shepherd.

The girl’s father, a wealthy and powerful man, found out about their love and decided to separate them. He locked Bigăr in a cave, and the girl, in despair, cried until her tears formed the waterfall.

Other Tourist Attractions in the Area:

Nerei-Beușnița Gorges National Park offers numerous hiking trails and other natural attractions, such as Ochiul Beiului Lake, Beușnița Waterfall, La Văioaga Waterfall, and Nerei Gorges. The area is ideal for nature and adventure enthusiasts, offering opportunities for camping, fishing, and spelunking.

Let’s enjoy the beauties of nature and leave them untouched for all those who come after us. It’s important to keep the places we visit clean by disposing of trash only in designated areas.

Wishing you inspired travels!
