Summer In A Town On The Erie Canal
Canal Days were going on when we visited Spencerport this past weekend
I grew up near the Erie Canal in Western New York. It is an iconic man-made canal that is centuries old — providing a method for goods to reach beyond the East Coast.
Now, the canal is still used for transporting goods. This spring a large bridge was transported via the canal that was made and imported from Italy to a park in Western New York.
But, it is also largely used for recreational purposes and always has been. I skated on the canal when I was young. Boats have always traversed the canal for recreation.
Today, you can kayak or canoe on the Erie Canal, use a motor boat, or see a tug boat.
When we’ve been in town to visit my dad in Brockport, New York over the last few years, my husband and I have taken advantage of the walking trails that travel next to the canal.
The trails are compressed gravel and flat. The scenery is pretty as you go through the little towns and further out. It is quiet and serene.
