The Ubiquitous Pie
Table Talk pies, baked in Massachusetts
Perhaps you have eaten one of these pies; they are sold in all fifty states, Puerto Rico, and beyond our borders. I have devoured a few of the 4-inch snack pies in my lifetime.
These pies predate my existence, offered for sale in 1924, which means my parents likely consumed a few before my birth in ‘41.
Worcester, Massachusetts, located about 60 miles west of my house, is the manufacturing site for these pies, employing about 300 people, with bragging rights for being one of the country’s leading pie producers.
In our current world, where many immigrants are disparaged, this successful pie company was built upon the talents and perseverance of two Greek men — immigrants. Today, the second and third generations continue their elders’ dreams.
Supposedly, the name Table Talk comes from families sitting at their table eating and talking, as families used to do before TV and smartphones. Whether true or not, I like the thought and image the name creates.
The Table Talk pie line is not limited to snack size. There are pies for a family and a crowd, 8” and 10", respectively. You will not find all the pies under the Table Talk label. Walmart, for example, sells its pies under…
