Brendan, TourRadar’s Chief Commercial Officer, provides insight into the meaning of adventure. Discover how his concepts of inspiration, curiosity, and the passion behind creating multi-day tours have led to TourRadar’s groundbreaking new approach that will revolutionise the industry.

Inspiration

Adventure is the perfect way to describe incredible, tangible and intangible experiences. It fits whether I recollect the adventures of my youth — exploring the back garden of our suburban home, discovering long-buried items from generations past — or focus on my great adventure as an adult when I lived and worked abroad for a number of years. However, the meaning of adventure isn’t necessarily restricted to travel. A beautiful piece of artwork, spellbinding stories, and performances that excite your senses can all be considered adventures of the mind. I’d equally propose that eating or learning to cook a new dish creates an undeniably wonderful adventure into the realms of smell and taste, often leaving one with memories and associations that last a lifetime. Although we’ve established that adventures can be found in various facets of our day-to-day lives, what is at the root of all adventures?

Curiosity

I believe that our curiosity is the driving force behind adventures. What will I find? Who will I meet? How will it taste? What will it look like? How will it make me feel? These burning questions — coupled with the desire to discover the answers — fuel adventures. To my mind, an adventure also takes time. It’s a process you engage in that intrigues, informs, and excites you over and over until at the end of it, you discover you’re no longer who you were at the start — you’ve become something more. Perhaps you’ve gained knowledge, a unique perspective, an appreciation for a different cuisine, or even new friends. At the end of the day, regardless of how you’ve changed or what sparked your initial curiosity, a multi-day tour is what brings together all of these elements of adventure.

Passion

Are you ready for your own adventure? Perhaps you want to search for hidden relics from a bygone era, meet people, try new foods, hike to a remote village, or immerse yourself in a different culture. The question is: where do you start with your planning? Whenever I’ve needed help in my life, I’ve turned to a professional. Car breaks down? See a mechanic. Sore tooth? Visit the dentist. Unsure how to cook a juicy roast? Call Mum. The same thinking applies when I want to go on an adventure; I turn to the guidance of the professionals to remove the mundane hassle of organisation and preparation.

Who are these artisans of travel? They’re the tour operators whose multi-day adventures we sell on TourRadar. These talented people have poured their passion into creating the framework and opportunity for travellers to explore new worlds, try new things, and embark on incredible adventures. The result of their committed efforts transcends the phrase of “multi-day tours” and is wonderfully captured in the new word: adventures. I recommend you go see, feel, taste, smell, and enjoy one for yourself!
