Find a Passion in Your Job and You Will Never Work a Day in Your Life
There are two kinds of people you will meet in your professional life; those who dread when their alarm rings, and those who truly find joy in what they do. From the title of this article, you can probably guess what kind of person I am.
At some point, we are all guilty of just jumping into any old job without even thinking about the long-term effects that it can have on us mentally and physically. We know that we need a job to pay our bills, hang out with friends or simply to save money for the vacation we’ve been dreaming about. However, when the average person spends over 90,000 hours at work in their lifetime compared to the 7,800 hours they spend socializing, I can’t help but wonder… is it really worth spending all that time at a job you don’t enjoy?
For me, life is far too short to spend it being unhappy. Therefore, I’ve chosen to spend my 90,000 hours working for a company that I enjoy being part of and believe in, TourRadar.
What is TourRadar you ask? Well, TourRadar is the world’s largest online travel agency for multi-day group tours around the world. We’re comprised of a close-knit team of travel enthusiasts who work hard to help connect travellers to life-enriching experiences. Together, we make it easier than ever before to book a tour online.
When I joined over two and a half years ago, TourRadar was a growing startup, and I haven’t looked back since. This role has been the highlight of my career and I can honestly tell you that I look forward to coming into the office each and every morning. A typical day in the office is filled with discussing innovative ideas with my colleagues, putting in the hard work to make things happen, and of course, a game or two of foosball to decide whose job it is to make coffee that day.
It’s common for many companies to resist change, but TourRadar is one that welcomes it with open arms. Whether it’s simply presenting a new idea to your manager or finding a solution to an existing problem, change, innovation and ideation are strongly encouraged amongst all teams.
I haven’t touched on the best part about working at TourRadar yet, and that’s getting to work with people from all over the world. With our headquarters in Vienna, Austria and offices in Brisbane, Australia and Toronto, Canada, our team is very international. It’s normal for global companies to feel disconnected from their remote offices but due to the encouraged continuous communication via video calls and instant messaging, your work colleagues soon become friends that you enjoy a beer with the next time they’re in town.
So how did I find my passion at TourRadar? For me, travelling is a huge part of my life so getting to work alongside like-minded globetrotters with the shared goal of booking people from around the world on their own dream trips excites me. If something, whatever it may be, can spark your interest and give you that much excitement, then it is a passion and you need to follow through with it and maybe even build a career around it like me.
When you have a passion for what you do, you will look forward to that alarm clock going off in the morning and be excited about that 9 am meeting. If this doesn’t sound like your current situation, then I recommend doing something today that your future self will thank you for. Search for that opportunity out there that will allow you to do what you love. Ignite that fire and you will never work a day in your life!
