Privacy and Publication: The Ethics of Open Data, Algorithms and the Internet

On Thursday, April 16th at 5:00 pm, Professor of Computer Science Steven Bellovin and Assistant Professor of Journalism Susan McGregor hosted a Tow Tea on Privacy and Publication: The Ethics of Open Data, Algorithms and the Internet.
Digital journalism today operates in a global sphere not limited by the geographic boundaries or transmission speed of traditional print publishing, changing the impact of what happens when we hit “publish.” Information discovery and access to services is also increasingly mediated by algorithms whose design is not clearly governed by ethical constraints. Together, Professor of Computer Science Steven Bellovin and Assistant Professor of Journalism Susan McGregor discussed how these issues interact with social and ethical concerns in an era of universal access to online publishing.
Steven Bellovin is the Percy K. and Vidal L. W. Hudson Professor of computer science at Columbia University, where he does research on networks, security, and especially why the two don’t get along, as well as related public policy issues. Bellovin is the co-author of Firewalls and Internet Security: Repelling the Wily Hacker, and holds a number of patents on cryptographic and network protocols.
Susan McGregor is Assistant Director of the Tow Center for Digital Journalism & Assistant Professor at Columbia Journalism School, where she helps supervise the dual-degree program in Journalism & Computer Science. She teaches primarily in areas of data journalism & information visualization, with a research interests in digital security, knowledge management and alternative forms of digital distribution.
