How emerging technology could help to protect our homes and families
In the U.S alone, it’s estimated that three out of four homes will be broken into within the next twenty years.
Sadly, police clear only 13% of reported burglaries due to lack of physical evidence or witnesses.
But all this could change thanks to artificial intelligence.
As home security systems and IoT technologies combine, we’re seeing a new class of smarter intruder alarms emerging. This includes mechanisms that boast improved accuracy in intrusion detection while reducing the incidence of false alarms.
IHS Markit research suggests that this is just the beginning for AI-enhanced intruder systems and that many applications are in the pipeline that will further boost home security systems.
This technology hopes to deliver higher standards of comfort and security within our homes.
AI, Machine Learning, and Deep Learning:
Artificial intelligence is the umbrella term for several data analytics processes. Machine learning is a subdivision of AI; it refers to a process that uses statistical techniques that give computers the ability to “learn” using data, without distinctly programming the computer system to do so.
Deep learning is a further subset of machine learning, involving processes based on deciphering the significance and meaning to be derived from input data.
The Beginnings of AI and Home Security Systems
There are two current applications that employ artificial intelligence in our home security systems.
The first is present in home security systems linked with consumer video cameras. In these systems, the video cameras use facial-recognition software to identify whether a moving object is a family member or an intruder.
In these specific environments, facial recognition represents a form of machine learning, where the security systems analyze any objects detected in the video footage against a pre-determined set of approved images that have been previously uploaded.
Based on this analytical process, the system will sound an alarm if the objects scanned fail to match any of the images stored.
The second application that utilizes AI tech is voice-assisted intruder alarm systems. In these systems, the voice assistant is developed using AI methodologies to ensure smooth user and device interactions.
The Potential Scope of AI and Home Security in the Future
There are many possibilities that AI offer for home security systems in the future.
For example, the use of artificial intelligence could lead to the creation of smart homes capable of learning the habits, ways, and preferences of all the occupants of a building.
This technology could identify changes in movement, differences in height, and variable in the tonation of peoples voices, immediately identifying strangers within a building.
These technologies could automatically adjust their settings across various systems to accommodate both standard patterns and changes in behavior.
As more intruder alarm systems become integrated with home automation devices, the security of our homes could become significantly improved.
Current home automation systems rely heavily on pre-determined scenarios which must be set up by the user, following specific criteria. All changes to the settings for these systems must be entered manually by the designated system operator.
Eventually, AI software could monitor activity within our houses and activate processes when home occupants go outside of the property, leaving it unlocked.
In these circumstances, if a family member should enter the house while the system is armed, the cameras could identify them immediately and choose not to sound the alarm.
AI processes could also be used to predict false alarms across the world.
This would be monitored by analyzing the circumstances that are prevalent in false alarm cases. Eventually, the AI could learn to predict the likelihood of a false alarm with near-accurate certainty, leading to reduced costs and fewer wasted resources for home security and police services.
Intrusion systems integrated with cameras could also help protect our children against kidnappings.
Cameras that monitor areas occupied by a child could sound an alarm upon the approach of a kidnapper, while also recording the image of the kidnapper and forwarding it directly to a monitoring center or the relevant police authorities.
Big brother is already watching us, but soon he’ll have his AI family with him.
