Pas De Deux: Creative Conversations

A pas de deux is a duet, a “conversation” between two dancers. But when fate enters, fresh thinking must follow. Once the American Ballet Theatre could no longer perform for live audiences earlier this year, they joined forces with Chanel to produce Pas De Deux, a docu-series of four short films brimming with creativity, collaboration and surprises.

Each of the episodes pairs an ABT dancer with a partner from another discipline. An augmented reality artist, say, or a chef, (yes!) or the Grammy® winning Alicia Keys.

Gabe Stone Shayer & Alicia Keys

Alicia opens her Pas De Deux episode with ABT soloist Gabe Stone Shayer this way: “The energy between music and dance is like, forever. It’s never been apart. They’re the closest of siblings. When you put a melody together with movement…there’s no soul you can’t touch.”

Gabe builds his dance on Alicia’s song, “Love Looks Better”. Not usually cast in royal roles, we see Gabe, sitting alone in the empty Apollo Theater preparing. Once in flight, he sets aside a brief bout of imposter syndrome to raise his hands above his head…and place an imaginary crown. Alicia, also mixed race, sees their shared experience, and notes “everybody is chasing something, but if I put all my love on those I care about, my love actually looks better on you.”

We hope these brilliant Pas De Deux stories inspire you as much as they have opened our eyes to the potential of creative collaboration.
