Based in Union City, California, our portfolio company Third Wave is transforming material handling in warehouses by using computer vision, robotics, and machine learning technology to make forklifts autonomous. Founded in 2018 by CEO Arshan Poursohi, chief robotics officer Mac Mason, and CTO James Davidson, Third Wave is making forklifts more efficient to operate, and improving warehouse safety — all through the process of shared autonomy.

Third Wave recently emerged from stealth and is now recruiting for a variety of roles. If you’re interested in joining a company that is disrupting the global forklift industry, read on to learn about the Third Wave roles currently available on the Toyota AI Ventures jobs board: technical program manager and machine learning (ML) software engineer.

Technical Program Manager (SF Bay Area)

Third Wave is looking for an experienced technical project manager who will play an essential part in bringing the Third Wave product to market. You will work closely with a world-class team of engineers, pilot customers, manufacturing partners, and the management team to help take the technology from prototype to shipped product. Your responsibilities will include monitoring project progress and managing timelines. You will also develop comprehensive project plans that match customer requirements with company goals, and collaborate across many different departments to balance those requirements with resources. You will need to analyze the economics of project plans, as well as external and internal data to identify gaps and opportunities.

The ideal candidate will have five or more years of experience in a similar role that includes driving product vision, go-to-market strategies, and design. You should also be familiar with multiple relevant functional areas, such as project management, engineering, UX/UI, sales, customer support, finance, and marketing.

Machine Learning Software Engineer (SF Bay Area)

Third Wave is looking for a machine learning (ML) engineer to design and deliver new autonomous forklifts. Your responsibilities will include designing, training, and verifying robust ML systems for warehouse automation. You will be building prototypes from scratch and writing maintainable code inside collaborative codebases. You will also design and train deep neural networks. This role calls for technical leadership, and you will be providing input on product development, identifying technical and developmental risks and obstacles, and giving recommendations on the development schedule.

The ideal candidate will be able to prototype ideas from research papers, think creatively, resolve technical challenges, and work around limitations. In the process, you will also deliver high-quality software design, documentation, and implementation.

This role requires a doctorate or master’s degree in computer science, electrical engineering, statistics, or a related field with a focus on reinforcement learning, ML, optimization theory, or another relevant area. Alternatively, three or more years of working experience with ML models would also suffice. You will also need experience in GPU technology and ML frameworks, and practical experience in developing ML systems, frameworks, and libraries. The ability to execute 3D math, optimization, and debugging is also needed. Knowledge of chipset architectures is a plus.
