Toyota AI Ventures Talent Network Featured Jobs: Regional Director, Government Relations and Senior Electrical Engineer
We recently announced that micromobility startup Skip has joined the Toyota AI Ventures portfolio. The company is hiring for a number of positions, and we’re excited to highlight two of those opportunities. This spotlight is part of our recurring column about the Toyota AI Ventures Talent Network; a place where job seekers can connect with some of the hottest startups in AI, mobility, and robotics.
Based in San Francisco, CA, Skip offers on-demand, dockless electric scooters that riders can reserve through its mobile app. Skip, which currently operates in San Francisco and Washington, D.C. and is testing its service in Austin, TX and San Diego, CA, is actively looking for employees who are passionate about last-mile transportation.
Regional Director, Government Relations (San Francisco, CA): Skip is currently hiring a regional director to head up government relations in the San Francisco Bay area. This role is pivotal to Skip’s goals of working together with local governments, and is at the center of promoting new ways of thinking about transportation through micromobility.
As Skip’s regional director of government relations, you’ll be responsible for building trust in Skip’s regulatory brand with riders, community members, businesses, and policymakers. You’ll form partnerships between these constituents and Skip, and develop solutions to regional market challenges. You will work closely with internal product, operations, legal, marketing, and communications teams to coherently articulate Skip’s viewpoint on key government issues and facilitate the development of new regulatory frameworks tailor-made for each market. You’ll also be tasked with building out and leading a local team of government relations and external affairs professionals in your region.
Qualified applicants should have a bachelor’s degree (advanced degree and/or JD preferred) and 6–12 years of experience in government, political or management consulting, lobbying, or political communications. You’ll also need experience in one or more of the following areas: city or state government, legislative affairs, urban mobility, political campaigns, local advocacy. For this position, Skip is looking for candidates with an exceptional moral compass, sound business judgement, strong leadership skills, and a curious nature. You’ll need to be able to demonstrate the ability not just to listen — but to hear and be able to effectively communicate verbally and in writing. An understanding of both regulatory processes and local/state politics is also essential, as is a willingness to travel.
Senior Electrical Engineer (San Francisco, CA): Skip is also looking for an experienced electrical engineer to help design its electric scooter fleet. This position would work both with internal Skip teams and external partners to create the next generation of micromobility vehicles.
In this position, you will drive the design of Skip’s scooters from concept through mass production and be responsible for overall vehicle architecture. By collaborating with your teammates and existing manufacturing partners, you will tackle shared fleet challenges, including serviceability, performance, safety systems, theft deterrence, connectivity, and power management. You will also use the latest industry practices to build schematic designs, vehicle layouts, and partnership efforts with contract manufacturers by travelling to supplier sites. You will contribute meaningfully to the development of Skip’s product and technology roadmap and drive multiple projects toward completion alongside the software team.
Applicants for the senior electrical engineer position should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering or similar field and at least 10 years of experience in automotive or consumer hardware product development. You also need a working knowledge of processor architecture, communication protocols, circuit design, and mixed-signal board-level design. A background in developing robust designs for ESD/EMI immunities, RF desensitization, and integration of RF technologies, such as Wi-Fi, BT, and GPS, is also necessary. Finally, due to the seniority of this position, you should have excellent communication skills and have worked on new product categories in the past.
Skip is experiencing tremendous growth and is also looking for logistics and operations staff in Austin, TX, San Diego, CA, and Washington D.C.
