Based in Boston, our portfolio company Sea Machines is bringing autonomy to the maritime industry. Sea Machines is applying artificial intelligence to the massive global ocean transportation market, providing ships and workboats with the technology to work remotely, increasing safety for maritime crews, and enabling operators to be more productive. The team, led by CEO and co-founder Michael Johnson, is made up of an experienced group of mariners, engineers, programmers, and autonomy scientists.

Sea Machines joined the Toyota AI Ventures portfolio in 2018, and its systems are now operational in six seas and oceans. Vessels with Sea Machines technology have navigated more than 20,000 miles autonomously to date. The team is growing rapidly, so if you’re interested in marine autonomy, check out these two jobs that are currently available on the Toyota AI Ventures job board: Director of System Test, and Senior Perception Scientist.

Director of System Test (Boston, Massachusetts)

Sea Machines is seeking a director of system test to develop and implement processes, automation tools, and best practices to test new marine products, verify regression functionality, and validate system performance. In this role, you will develop and implement the software testing process, automation framework, and associated tooling for the Sea Machines product set. You will also work closely with the engineering team to ensure that software releases are tested for functionality and regression. Other responsibilities include validating the functionality and performance of updated and new platform configurations, providing timely reporting on product qualification status and system performance metrics, and working closely with the product management team to deliver committed software releases. You will be a multi-disciplinary engineering leader, while also working cross-functionally with technical teams across the company.

The ideal candidate has a bachelor’s degree in computer science, software engineering, or a similar discipline, and at least seven years of experience in system testing — with at least two years in a leadership role. Recent exposure to the startup environment, including building a test framework from the ground up, is also helpful. Experience testing products with a machine learning (ML) component is desirable, as are demonstrated skills using code repositories, Continuous Integration, and Continuous Testing systems. Experience with programming languages such as C, C+, C++, Python, and SQL is also a plus. You should be a highly motivated self-starter, with great analytical and communication skills.

Senior Perception Scientist (Boston, Massachusetts)

Sea Machines is seeking a senior perception scientist with deep learning (DL) and computer vision experience who will play a critical role in developing the next stage of perception research and development. In this role, you will design, develop, and integrate the high-quality perception technology for marine vessels related to ML, DL, computer vision, and image processing. You will focus on object recognition, distance estimation, semantic segmentation, and sensor fusion from large scale data sets with multi-sensor data (such as AIS, radar, LiDAR, visible cameras, and thermal cameras). You will also explore and select the DL and ML framework to conduct training on real-world data, as well as analyze data and conduct performance evaluations of delivered technology.

You should have a master’s degree or a doctorate in computer science, electrical engineering, or related fields, with a publication record on relevant topics. Professional experience with deep learning-based computer vision is also a must, as well as with developing DL models in real-world data. The ideal candidate is an excellent communicator, able to work cross-functionally, and highly skilled in analysis and program-solving. Professional C++ programming and software design skills are a plus, as is familiarity with GPU computing, parallel programming, and Spark ML.
