Recogni, one of Toyota AI Ventures’ most recent investments, is building a vision-oriented AI system to help autonomous vehicles (AV) work faster and see farther than similar solutions. Based in Silicon Valley, with operations in Munich, Germany, Recogni is the focus of this week’s Toyota AI Ventures Talent Network jobs post.

Founded in 2017 by industry veterans RK Anand, Ashwini Choudhary, Valerie Chan, Giles Backhus, and Eugene Feinberg, Recogni strives to solve one of the growing barriers to AV maturity — overcoming the power demands of perception systems. With sensors like radar, LiDAR, and depth cameras generating several terabytes of data per hour, AV data and power needs are growing dramatically and have the potential to outpace current vehicle power limitations. Recogni’s system is designed to lower the power requirements of inference hardware, while maintaining the performance needed for AVs to react in milliseconds.

The company is hiring for several key positions, and it’s a great place for dedicated, passionate professionals looking to join a startup to help make the next generation of AVs safer and more efficient.

Camera and Imaging Architect: Depth cameras are one of the most popular AV sensors and are a key source of vehicle data for Recogni. As a result, the startup is looking for a Camera and Imaging Architect to expand its multi-camera, multispectral imaging system for real-time machine vision.

The Camera and Imaging Architect is a senior role that includes overall ownership of camera system design and feasibility studies. You will also work closely with Recogni’s machine vision team to co-design multi-modal sensing systems, and be responsible for optical system specifications and system design for manufacturing. In addition, this role requires working with off-shore design manufacturers to develop a plan for volume manufacturing of future Recogni imaging products.

Qualifications include a background in optical system design and specification, the ability to understand basic image sensor architecture, and a working knowledge of multi-spectral imaging. Management experience, particularly with optical system contract manufacturing selection, is also important.

Lead ASIC Design Verification Engineer: Recogni’s engineers are designing hardware to achieve top-tier computational performance at low power, and the team is hiring a lead engineer to be responsible for pre-silicon verification and quality assurance of the convolutional neural network accelerator ASIC.

It’s a perfect opportunity for a multi-talented engineer who is excited to collaborate with the architecture and design teams on ASIC implementation. Key duties include developing comprehensive test and coverage strategies, implementing verification environments and tests using object-oriented tools (including SystemVerilog and UVM), and creating new scripts and methodologies for the front-end ASIC flow.

To qualify, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a similar field. Other requirements for this role include 5+ years of ASIC verification experience and strong Verilog/System Verilog programming skills. You also need experience with UVM verification, a deep understanding of object-oriented programming, and scripting experience with Python, Perl, TCL, or shell programming. Due to the technical nature of this position, Recogni would like you to have strong interactive and waveform debug skills, as well.

AV systems must analyze the environment, recognize objects at a distance, and make safety-oriented decisions in milliseconds. Recogni is building the tools needed to keep up with the power demands that programming of this magnitude requires.

If you’d like to join the Recogni team, find out more about these two jobs and many others on the Toyota AI Ventures jobs board. While you’re there, apply to join the Toyota AI Ventures Talent Network.
