Based in the Boston area, our portfolio company Perceptive Automata is working to help address one of the biggest challenges in autonomous driving: helping autonomous vehicles (AVs) better understand humans. Perceptive Automata’s software is designed to enable AVs to operate more smoothly by interpreting and predicting what people will do — whether it’s the driver of another vehicle, a cyclist, or a pedestrian.

The company is growing, and has several open roles in its Advanced R&D team. If you’re looking to join a startup that combines insights about human behavior with computer vision and machine learning to make autonomous driving safer, you’ll find Perceptive Automata a rewarding environment to put your skills to the test.

Director, Advanced R&D: Perceptive Automata’s Advanced R&D team represents the forefront of research, exploration, and execution of new software techniques that impact a range of projects, including in-vehicle perception and prediction, model training and evaluation, data analysis, and environment simulation. The company is currently looking for a senior-level candidate to help lead this team.

In this position, you will be responsible for establishing R&D development priorities and timelines based on organizational needs. You’ll provide leadership and guidance to junior team members and scale headcount to accelerate internal pre-production development. The director position will also require you to communicate with other teams within Perceptive Automata and effectively coordinate plans, progress, and proposals.

To qualify, you’ll need an advanced degree in computer science or robotics, along with 5–10 years of experience building cutting-edge software, ideally in the AV space. You should also have a broad background that includes experience with machine learning, computer vision, dynamic object prediction, pathing, and sensor fusion. This position is well-suited for a professional who has previously built and developed strong technical teams and has deep interpersonal communications and problem solving skills.

Software Engineer, Machine Learning: Perceptive Automata’s Advanced R&D team also has an immediate opening for a software engineer with a background in deep learning, specifically in areas like training generative models, scaling deep learning frameworks, and optimizing the performance of deep learning models. In this role, you’ll work on a variety of projects related to training and analyzing core models, and moving them from test and development into production.

This position requires a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer science (or equivalent work experience), plus 2–5 years of experience building commercial or research-grade software. You’ll also need a strong programming background with Python and C++, as well as experience training convolutional neural networks on large-scale datasets. Strong written and verbal communications skills are necessary, as well.
