Tezos and Hic et Nunc
Hic et Nunc, a Tezos-based NFT marketplace that has quickly become one of the most popular platforms in the Tezos community since its launch on March 1 and is currently the largest NFT platform based on Daily Active Users (+2,500 p/day), will host an open-invitation hackathon this weekend.
The Hicathon is an all-volunteer community-driven hackathon running from Saturday, May 22 at 2:00pm CET to Sunday, May 23 at 8:00pm CET. The initiative is made possible by the Hic et Nunc community, generous donations from artists and collectors, and a generous grant from the Tezos Foundation. The platform, which will surpass 100,000 objects minted by the end of May, is the chosen home for a diverse group of artists from all over the world spanning the entire range from unknown to well-known and covers the entire range of creative expression: visual art, generative, conceptual or interactive art, music, literature, and performance. Some of the Hic et Nunc creators include pioneering AI artist Mario Klingemann, visual artist and software engineer Helena Sarin, climate activist Joanie Lemercier, early crypto artists Angie Taylor and LuluxXX, the band Yacht, creative technologist Memo Akten, and creative director James Paterson.
Hic et Nunc means “here and now,” and for its founder, Rafael Lima:
“The main idea has been experimenting with creative economies right now as an alternative, also to the traditional “DeFi” (decentralized finance) mode of thinking.”
On Hic et Nunc, artists from around the world can mint NFTs for a fraction of the gas costs of Ethereum based platforms. Since the platform runs on Tezos’ Liquid Proof of Stake technology, NFTs on Hic et Nunc consume over two million times less energy than Proof of Work. The low carbon footprint of Tezos means developers and users can prioritize innovation without compromising sustainability. The clean, open, and accessible properties of Hic et Nunc have attracted an inclusive community of creatives and collectors; it has become known as a platform for those who champion social justice and environmental advocacy.
Lima has successfully navigated running the platform single-handedly and with the help of contributing developers (total sales as of May 19 were 1,087,492 tez, an equivalent of approximately $6,144,329 USD). But with that explosive growth comes a need for technical and developer support to continue to improve scalability and improve features. With only a small core dev team dedicated to day-to-day maintenance, bug fixes, and engineering new features, a challenge to meet demand persists. With that in mind, Hic et Nunc is hosting its first-ever hackathon to help catalyze the community to help the platform continue to evolve.
About HICATHON
The Hic et Nunc community has been consolidating the most urgent technical issues, improvements, and features to create a base hierarchy to help determine what the currently over 250 participants will be working on. In addition to key strategy discussions on the evolution of the platform and its roadmap, participants will accelerate and prototype new feature implementations such as galleries, resales, and dApps. As a platform made by artists for artists, major discussion points will revolve around finding adecentralizedgovernance model for the Hic et Nunc hDAO token.
While immediate improvements are highly valuable to the longevity of Hic et Nunc, the team also hopes the developments during the Hicathon will help improve the NFT ecosystem on Tezos as a whole through open-source app development and infrastructure for emerging NFT platforms. There is also a pool of tez relegated for distribution for projects that actively contribute to the improvement of Hic et Nunc.
The Hicathon and the hundreds of registered participants demonstrate the Tezos community’s capacity to support projects that actively contribute to the growth of the ecosystem.
