Earlier Today, Donald Trump tweeted that the New York Times was lying about his statements on countries acquiring nuclear weapons:

This is demonstrably false. On multiple occasions, Trump was asked about nuclear proliferation. In his answers, he consistently said countries either needed to pay the U.S. more for our security umbrella or develop their own nuclear deterrence.

In March, when asked if Japan and South Korea should pay for more of their own defenses, Trump told the New York Times “Now, does that mean nukes? It could mean nukes.”

Three days later, on March 29th, Trump when asked about these comments on CNN, he said “Wouldn’t you rather Japan have nuclear weapons?”

On April 3rd, Chris Wallace with FoxNews returned to this issue and Donald Trump said “Maybe they [Japan] would be better off, including with nukes, yes including with nukes.”
