Fantasy Cricket on TradeStars
And our quest to build new breed of fantasy sports game.
It is a well known fact that cricket is the most popular and most played game in India. It is that popular that it is played everywhere, and be it in the streets or at the pitchfield this sport is treated as a religion in the country.
The passion for this sport comes from long ago when India won its first cricket world cup in 1983. Led by the extraordinary captain Kapil Dev this event was a breakpoint in the history of cricket for the Asian nation.
It took India another 28 years to have the chance to win the cricket world cup again, and during this time frame the country’s obsession for the sport grew many times, expanding to what it means today where it stands as the most watched and played sport of India.
Besides the two world cups, there are many other key events that an Indian cricket fan has in its memories though. One of the outstanding — impossible to forget — is the second test of the border-gavaskar trophy, where the Indian team was forced to follow on after collapsing in the first innings. After this forced follow on, the team scored a mammoth 657 runs — thanks to the exceptional performance by Rahul dravid and VVS Lakshman — this allowed India to turn the match and comfortably win by 171 runs.
It was only the third time in the history of cricket that a team won a match after being forced to follow on. And this was one of those moments that deeply rooted the love for the sport in India while also making it one of the best matches ever played on Indian soil.
Fantasy Gaming in India
As we have already mentioned in previous articles, the passion for Fantasy Sports is spread worldwide, and rather than being an exception to this, India is one of the countries where the industry shows the most impressive numbers.
A 2019 IFSG-KPMG report indicates the growth of this industry has been at least of 10x since 2016, and there’s no sign of this to be stopping or decelerating, but on the contrary extending to more users, faster and leveraging on the 4G networks and overall internet penetration everywhere.
The overwhelming traction that the fantasy gaming industry is having in India has shown the fact that people in the country are indeed also interested in the social interaction around their favorite sport. At the end, who hasn’t argued with a friend or a work aquintance regarding on who’s going to win the next match, what player needs to leave the field, what player need to enter it, who has to leave the team, retire, and so on ?
IFSG-KPMG 2019 report indicates that there are about 20 million fantasy gamers in India right now. In 2016, this number was just two million. The mass penetration of mobile 4G has also popularised fantasy sports (along with several other internet services) in the country.
At present, we can find numerous — succesfull — fantasy cricket games in India. Platforms such Dream11, Mobile Premier League, Hala play, Khelchamps, my11 circle have received great appreciation from the Indian community with the total number of players exceeding 100 million in just 6 years after being introduced.
Who hasn’t argued with a friend or a work aquintance regarding on who’s going to win the next match, who has to leave the team, enter the game and so on ?
The opportunity for people to use their sports knowledge, pick their favorite players and get rewards according to the real-life performance of the athletes has brought direct interaction of fans with the game and a unique social experience outside of the pitchfield.
TradeStars and Blockchain Fantasy
As we introduced in previous articles, TradeStars is a new breed of Fantasy Sports game based on four fundamental principles: Digital Ownership, Transparency, Liquidity, and Decentralization.
How does TradeStars works?
I must say first that we have many features yet to come and a huge roadmap ahead, but let’s focus now on a real example of what cricket fantasy sports fans can do right uppon the game launch.
Trading on Fantasy Sports virtual stocks
On login, you’ll be presented a dashboard where you’ll be able to search and select athletes’ cards from different cricketing nations.
- Select Cricket from the list of available sports supported.
- Search for your athletes pick from the search box.
- Click on buy tokens.
Each athlete on tradestars has been given a ticket name such as: Virat Kohli as VIKO, Ahmed Shehzad as AHSH, David Miller as DAMI.
There are no limitations on how many athlete’s tokens one would like to trade. The price of the tokens will be stated by the game at the trading time, managed by the TradeStars’ Smart Contracts, but in simple terms as the market demand of the token increases (more buying) so will be the price of the tokens.
It can also be stated that, the earlier the tokens are bought the lower is the price at which it are acquired.
For example:
The demand for Virat Kohli increases with every match due to his brilliant form in all formats of the game — No 1 cricketer in the world for a reason — . If a user wants to purchase the Virat Kohli (VIKO) tokens on TradeStars and if the user is among the first to purchase tokens, he could get VIKO at the lowest price.
The expected demand for VIKO tokens will increase with his real life performance. If the user purchases the tokens when the demand is high, the price of the VIKO tokens will be high in direct relation with the supply.
In the game, an athlete is evaluated based on different metrics, such as the runs scored, wickets taken, strike rate, past performance and so on. Depending on the situation, the user will build their own strategy and buy athlete tokens depending on the match conditions, pitch conditions, toss, forecast and other factors that could have an impact on the game.
The users in the game sell the athlete tokens when the conditions or form of the athlete is not favorable. This creates an opportunity to outsmart other users in the game by making early decisions and strategies that are made in accordance with the athletes who have been consistent performers throughout the year.
How to create and outsmart other users with an interesting portfolio of athlete tokens:
If a match is to be played between India and Australia at Adelaide(Australia), for example, it is known that Australian pitches are fast-paced and do very little for spin bowlers. It would also be a batsman’s paradise if the pitch becomes flat. In such conditions, it would be wise that token of athletes such as Mohammed Shami, Ishant Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav are bought from the Indian team.
Similarly, tokens from athletes such as Josh Hazelwood, Mitchell Stark from the Australian team could be bought. These athletes are capable of out-performing Indian batsmen in these conditions. The choice of the athletes has to be made strategically according to various conditions in the match. If a user wants to build a portfolio of best playing XI, he could choose more athletes from the Australian team rather from the Indian team. Since the Australian athletes are more adaptable to the playing conditions and can perform well.
If in the same match, there are slight chances that there could be rain/showers in the second half of the game and Indian team picks Yuzvendra Chahal and fortunately Australian team does not have a spinner. If as predicted by the forecast and it rains, then Chahal would be a great bowler who could impact the entire game. In this case the demand of Chahal’s tokens would dramatically increase. Thus, creating more earning potential for the players who have Chahal in their portfolio.
This is an introductory idea into what we believe is revolutionary for the Fantasy Sports. We are building a decentralized trading platform based on tokenization of Athletes’s real-life performances, where digital assets are traded with no intermediaries, and transparency is provided by the use of Ethereum Smart Contracts.
