⌚️ It’s time for you (yes, YOU!) to Be a Builder 🛠
Join us on a 10-day learning adventure where you’ll build a business app from start to finish, have the chance to win some prizes…and we’ll be there with you every step of the way!
Last year, I thought, “We can be better!” So I built and launched a content management app that made it faster and easier for the Salesforce Admins team to plan and deliver content (check out the magic here). After I shared my experience with the #AwesomeAdmin community, I found that they were inspired to build apps for their own teams and companies (hear for yourself!).
Building something that changed how we worked and that inspired other Admins made me feel SO empowered and happy. It’s hard to put into words, but it looked something like this:
That’s when I fully understood what it means to be a builder on the Salesforce platform. And now, it’s time to share the love with Be a Builder! Whether you’re building with clicks or code, you have an amazing opportunity to create exponential impact with the solutions you create and the innovation you deliver. You have the tools, and you’ll have our guidance — let’s start the 10-day Be a Builder learning adventure together.
Build an app…
Anyone can Be a Builder! With help from our Salesforce Admin and Developer evangelists, you’ll learn how to take each step in the app building process over 10 days. Every week day at 10 a.m. PDT, we’ll post a new video covering the “Topic of the Day” and demo an app-in-progress. We’ll also suggest a Trailhead module to help you go deeper on the topic.
You can either follow along by building the same app (and get all your Astros in a row!) or apply the learnings to build a custom app for yourself or your company. Either way, if you follow each step and earn each badge, you’ll find yourself ready to get your App Customization Specialist superbadge.
…And win prizes!
Not only will you be on track to master app building, but you can win some awesome prizes too! On April 30, May 1, May 7, and May 9, the daily video will include special “shout out” instructions. Simply share out on Twitter and you’ll be entered to win an exclusive prize pack that includes a custom Be a Builder T-shirt, a Trailhead water bottle, wooden coasters, and a surprise!
Plus, if you complete the superbadge by May 31st, you’ll also earn a special Be a Builder community badge and pin (while supplies last).
As if this wasn’t enough, as an added bonus, you can take your app-building adventure even further. If you decide to take the custom app route over the 10-day period, you can then submit your creation in the APPVENTURES contest.
Five lucky teams will win a trip to Dreamforce to be recognized as leaders in app development on the Lightning Platform — check out all the exciting deets here.
Advice from the experts
As we’re on this adventure together, we’ve compiled three key things to keep in mind when building your app, as well as some expert advice from our Salesforce Evangelists who will lead the way:
1. Think outside the box 📦
When building an app to replace a current business process, you’re creating something brand new. In fact, you are innovating. I know this because there’s a badge for that! The Trailhead Innovation Basics module defines innovation as “…anything that is both new and useful. It can be a product or service, a process, or a way of organizing. It can be incremental or breakthrough.”
So, let this app building adventure be an opportunity for you to think outside the box and re-evaluate how your current processes and projects work.
Principal Admin Evangelist, LeeAnne Rimel, wants to remind you that:
“Builders are problem solvers and innovators who use the platform to create new ways to accomplish goals.”
2. Slay the process 🙅🔁
If there’s one thing I’ve learned throughout my career, it’s that process is everything. Anything from update-emails you write once a week, to complex multi-step order fulfillments, or any repetitive task or steps taken in a particular order is a process. Once you understand this, you’ll see processes everywhere and you’ll start to see all the inefficiencies and opportunities for change.
Part of building a great app is taking a business process, breaking it down, identifying inefficiencies, and building automated, smart solutions to make it more efficient.
Senior Admin Evangelist, Gillian Bruce, wants you to:
“Note how long it currently takes to do a process manually and see how much time you can save your company by putting that process into your app!”
3. App Building for all 🛠
If you’ve been reading this and thinking, “This all sounds great, can Admins learn to do this?” or “I’m a Dev, is this actually for me?” Well, the answer is, “Yassss!” The content you’ll learn is important for both Salesforce Admins and Devs — our evangelists will talk about the roles and perspectives for both. Just like rounding out your knowledge with sales and marketing, gaining a foundational knowledge of the app building world will go a long way in your professional development.
Developer Evangelist, Heather Dykstra, who will be joining us on this app building journey to explain important builder concepts, wants you to keep in mind:
“Understanding what you can do declaratively versus programmatically helps you maximize efficiency and build apps faster.”
I’m in! Now what?
Joining the adventure is easy. All you have to do is visit the Be a Builder page each day over the 10-day journey. A topic-specific video will unlock at 10 a.m. PDT each week day starting on April 26th.
Watch the video, complete the recommended module, and earn the badge. Follow along with us (or build your own custom app using the same principles) and you’ll be a master builder in no time (well, 10 working days to be exact!). And if you have questions or get stuck along the way, simply post in the Admin Trailblazers group using #beabuilder.
Don’t just take my word for it
Jumping into the app building world has fundamentally changed the way I work…for the better. Learning how to build and customize apps to solve specific business needs has also helped me to better understand Salesforce. And I’m not the only one who believes this!
