Dear reader, you’re about to experience iconic destinations like never before. This article imagines what cities would say if they could talk and use social media just like us.

Hello, darlings! Welcome to the Destination Spotlight Podcast (DSP), where we shine the brightest lights on the most amazing destinations for your listening pleasure. It’s our first episode spilling the tea on what destinations will like to say to locals, foreigners, and tourists alike. I’m Times Square, New York — your neon-soaked, always-awake, and utterly fabulous host. Let’s begin!

Our first episode will review the big question: “What makes the ultimate destination?”

Right now, Paris is in full glam. The Olympics have gathered steam, drawing the world’s attention to this iconic city. But the question on every destination’s mind is, how does Paris do it? How does she keep her doors open year after year, boosting both local and global tourism? In an interview two weeks ago, responding in true Parisian fashion, Paris finally gave a reply:

“To be the ultimate enigma of a city, simply have the Eiffel Tower. You must also break a few poets’ hearts — les poètes éplorés are the finest at weaving romance around a city. But, darling, ensure these poets are either great or destined to be so. And, mon cher, never let the common folk through the gates. They are the worst! — let them in once and you’ll be swarming with their little nuisances… What’s the word? Ah… yes, bed bugs! Do this, and you’ll become moi… (coughs) I mean, the most magnifique city, ever.”

A fascinating take indeed. Going by this, Paris is telling every destination to become...well, Paris which is impossible. For one, there’s only one Eiffel Tower and this isn’t the 1920s where poets romanticized cities. It seems the City of Light has no light to shine on this. We’ll be here looking at data from around the world to provide answers to this important question. In the meantime, let’s listen to this message from our lead sponsor, Trameter.

Back to the discussion. In a turn of events, an amazing occurrence is giving hope to lesser-known destinations, showing that you don’t have to be Paris to be world-famous. Just two days after the Olympics began, Taylor Swift’s final show in Munich drew an additional 50,000 Swifties to a hill near the concert venue, Olympiastadion, Munich. On the 27th of July, the Olympic Hill in Munich was just like any other hill until a swift transformation pushed it into a global phenomenon status.

This photo from above is from a TikTok video circulating that, at first glance, looks like a giant pile of…well, let’s just say it’s not your average hill decor. But nope, it’s actually thousands of incredible fans turning that hill into their very own Swiftie sanctuary. How’s that for an unexpected tourist attraction?”

You know, they say it’s better to let the storyteller tell their own story. Let’s hear Olympic Hill tell the story like it is. Here are screenshots from the Hill’s feed on social media, narrating how the story went down and why Munich should be on your travel list.

We’re absolutely thrilled for Olympic Hill here at DSP! This just goes to show that you don’t need Parisian charm to make it big. All you need is to be exactly what people are looking for.

The Swifties were on a quest to see their fave in action, and Olympic Hill provided the perfect vantage point. Every destination has its unique perks — you just have to dig a little to find them.

Thanks, guys for tuning into the podcast. I’d like to hear from you in the comments. What destinations would you like to hear from next?

That’s a wrap for today. Until next time, keep exploring and stay curious! See you on the next adventure!

Safe adventures!
