Out Of Alignment
I wouldn’t say I’m the best at taking care of our vehicles. Actually, I’d say I’m one of the worst. After all, if it’s running well, why bother with it. “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” right?
Unfortunately automobiles don’t work that way. I learned that lesson the hard way recently.
Several months ago as we were driving down the road, I noticed a slight bounce in my vehicle. It wasn’t a huge deal so I didn’t pay much attention to it. I’m sure it will just fix itself. Fast forward 3 months and apparently my Ford Expedition had transformed into a conestoga wagon from Little House on the Prairie. Driving down even the smoothest roads produced enough bumps that I began to question whether my children should be wearing helmets.
Being the 2016 version of Mr. Goodwrench, I concluded I needed new tires and found some that I liked. My neighbor and I put on the new rims and tires and I was good to go. Although the wagon feel had disappeared, I was still a bit disappointed with the ride. I was picturing more riding on clouds and less turbulence.
Turns out my wheels needed to be aligned. Apparently it didn’t matter how much time and money I put into the rims/tires, if the ol’ Ford was out of alignment, it wasn’t going to function the way it was supposed to.
Sure enough, after the alignment, it was smooth sailing. Why didn’t I think of that?
From my understanding (which is minimal at best) because the vehicle was out of alignment, not only did it prevent my new tires from rolling correctly, it aged and damaged my previous ones prematurely. Lesson learned.
As easy as this is to comprehend when it comes to vehicles, we often miss the point of aligning ourselves. (No, I’m not discussing a trip to the chiropractor, but if that’s your thing go right ahead).
It is very easy for our lives to quickly become misaligned. After all, when you take into account all of the moving parts like relationships, health, work, finances, etc. it doesn’t take us long for our wheels to start spinning (pun intended).
This misalignment can often lead to illness, undue stress, broken relationships and regrettable decisions.
Fortunately, if we take a step back and look at the bigger picture we can return to proper alignment. By making good decisions about our health, giving of our time and talents, practicing the golden rule and spending time with the great Mechanic our lives can start rolling smoothly again.
This doesn’t mean there won’t be some bumps in the road, after all, that’s part of life (I think I’ve reached my limit for corny metaphors). But as we recommit ourselves to focusing on what’s most important we’ll find our lives becoming what they were designed to be….(even if our vehicle is not).
