You can now upload and view a BIM model up to five times larger on bimU.io Viewer.
Thanks to the brilliant work done by bimU.io Dev Team who has been pushing the limit! I’m pleased to announce that bimU.io Viewer now supports large BIM model upload. An even better news is that the large model support will remain part of bimU.io Viewer Free offering until the end of 2020.

Very large! About 5 to 6 times larger than the previous size limit on the uncompressed model geometry. We have done some testing internally with a couple of large BIM model files. Unfortunately, we are not able to disclose further information due to project confidentiality. In terms of the sample models provided by bimU.io, the current size limit is equivalent to 55 sample building models or 15 sample federated models. More technical details can be found in the current limitations.
Does file size matter?
Really depends. Autodesk Revit file (.rvt) can contain lots of data, including Families, Sheets, etc. Autodesk Navisworks file (.nwc/.nwd) is a more compact format. It has been witnessed that a 1 GB Revit file and a 100 MB Navisworks file could have almost the same export size for bimU.io. Model element visibility also matters as bimU.io exports only visible objects in the current view.
How about performance?
The limit increase we are talking about here is all about server-side processing. You would need a more powerful device with higher graphics performance to view a huge BIM model. bimU.io’s web viewer performance has also improved significantly. It’s probably the best in the market. Check out our benchmark testing here.
How to streamline export process?
Revit export process is usually quicker than Navisworks and Tekla ones. Try to detach or hide unused references, DWG/DGN drawings, terrain, landscape, trees, etc. to expedite the export process.
Is IFC forgotten?
Definitely not. IFC file size limit increase is still a work in progress. It remains at 150 MB at the moment. We also have a plan to support other 3D authoring formats, such as Rhino 3D (.3dm), SketchUp (.skp), etc.
We are finalising a roadmap for the upcoming financial year 20/21. Viewer API, AR/VR, issue/task management, and more are coming this year! Fancy customising your BIM model more easily? Stay tuned.
