Super Mario Bros (Nintendo)

Super Mario Bros: the Movie is set to become the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time. Critics rave that it’s fundamentally joyful for all audiences while also lamenting that it doesn’t reach for something deeper.

Look at recent releases like The Lego Movie, says Filmcast co-host Jeff Cannata. Clearly animated movies made primarily for kids can also reach for a significance and meaning that transcends all ages by growing in significance as we age.

After the debacle that was the live-action movie starring Bob Hoskins and still-at-it John Leguizamo in one of his first feature film roles, it’s a testament to the enduring power of Mario as a character and a franchise that we still yearn to give the mustachio-draped hero a chance to shine like a Star.

(Buena Vista)

Maybe that’s why the newest Super Mario Bros movie has a ROTTEN score on Rotten Tomatoes despite nearly all of those “Rotten” reviews saying the same thing: the movie is joyful!
