Slovakia companies information from Business Register of the Slovak Republic

As a data provider about companies from Slovakia and other countries in Europe, we are starting a new series of articles in which we will introduce you to public registry sources on which our APIs and data software solutions are based. We hope that the checked numbers, specific information and useful dictionaries will make this content a real mine of knowledge about registration data in the EU.

Meet Obchodný register — The Slovak Republic Business Register on Internet

The original name of the commercial register of Slovakia is Obchodný register, and the authority that administers it is the Ministry of Justice of the Slovak Republic. We can easily access it from http://orsr.sk and we don’t have to necessarily know the Slovak language, because we can easily switch to the English version of the website. Obchodný register full English name is The Slovak Republic Business Register on Internet.

The Business Register of the Slovak Republic has been available online for everyone since 2004 and contains basic business data on all companies registered in Slovakia from 2001, both legal entities and individual entrepreneurs. It is worth noting that through this trade register Slovakia also facilitates more and less extensive risk management, because we can obtain there current, up-to-date extracts from the commercial register of Slovakia. They are useful as a basis for company verification and a basis for negotiations.

Slovakia companies search is quite intuitive and transparent in the register. In the following sections of the article, we will tell you about the types of enterprise data that we might find and which we might not find in Obchodný register (financial statements of Slovak companies are in a different database), possible legal forms of entities, and we will tell you more about how many companies are in Slovakia today.

What kind of business information Slovakia commercial register provides?

Commercial register of Slovakia, Obchodný register, in its open version, offers relatively little company data compared to, for example, such European registers as the Polish National Court Register or the British Companies House.

The Slovak Republic Business Register on Internet provides exactly these types of business information on Slovak companies:

  • company name
  • ICO number (8 digits tax identification number in the Slovak Republic)
  • legal form type
  • section code (often similar to company legal form abbreviation)
  • specified district court information
  • registration number (called in Obchodný register Insert Nr which looks for example like 127285/B)
  • head office address street
  • main business activity information (called in commercial register of Slovakia Objects of the company)
  • incorporation date
  • dissolution date
  • company capital amount registered and paid up
  • information about companies and people connected with the economic entity (business relation type, the name of the related entity which has a stake in the Slovak company or the name and surname of a management board member with the description of the position and the date of its commencement).

Few words about Slovakia companies search

Business Register of the Slovak Republic allows you to search for information in 5 different ways:

  • Business name of the Slovak company
  • ICO identification number
  • Registered seat
  • Registration number
  • Name of a person.
The Slovak Republic Business Register on Internet: Slovak companies search

When you want to search for a Slovak companies by business name, you can either just enter the name or refine the search by selecting the appropriate legal form (joint-stock company, limited partnership, self-employed individual etc.) and one of the eight available district courts. Similarly, when you want to search by identification number, you can either just enter ICO or refine the search by selecting one of the eight available district courts. Searching by name of the person is obvious (first name, last name), but the Slovakia companies search looks a bit different in other cases.

If you want to search for an entity using its registration number, you can provide the appropriate section (legal form abbreviation), insert number and appropriate Slovak district court. On the other hand, if we want to search for company data registered in Slovakia by their address (which is quite an interesting function for entrepreneurs), we have to enter street name and number, municipality and we can also refine the search by selecting one of the eight available district courts.

Extracts from the commercial register of Slovakia

In the results of searching for Slovak company on Obchodný register database, we will see the list of current, up-to-date extracts from the Business Register of a specific regional district, for example the District Court Bratislava I. All the basic, key information will be there.

Unfortunately, those extracts have only indicative character and are not applicable for legal acts. You can’t also download them directly from the registry. You can only take a print screen of it or copy its content. There is a fee to obtain a full extract with apostille from the commercial register of Slovakia, and this is done by various legal companies.

Number of companies in Slovakia in 2020

At the moment, November 2020, over 483,000 entities and over 1.5 million people occupying key positions are registered in The Slovak Republic Business Register on the Internet. Some of them are of course cooperatives, branches, municipal authorities and enterprises, but the majority of registered entities consists of private, commercial legal companies.

The number of different types of companies in Slovakia in 2020, presents as follows:

  • 8.2 thousand joint-stock companies in Slovakia (JS)
  • 303.3 thousand limited liability companies (LCC)
  • 1.3 thousand companies with limited partnership (LP)
  • about a thousand companies known as general partnerships (GP).

Note that the above data applies only to active companies, not historical ones collected in the register. We know all these numbers of companies from our Slovakia companies API which aggregates data directly from the official commercial register. If the original source contains errors, some numbers may be slightly different from reality. Hardly any public database is without them.

Considering the fact that the Slovak Republic is a relatively small European country with a current population of 5.45 million people, it should be noted that the economic sector remains in good shape there. Slovakia is, inter alia, a world leader in the production of cars per capita. The other main industries of this country include: metal and metal products; electricity, gas, oil, chemicals, synthetic fibers, wood and paper products and machinery.

How to find financial statements of Slovak companies?

Company data of Slovakia: Registry of Financial Statements

The good news is that financial information on business in Slovakia is accessible to everyone, free of charge, in a separate database kept by the Ministry of Finance of the Slovak Republic. The internet Register of Financial Statements (in Slovak, Register účtovných závierok) was established in 2014 and you can find it at https://www.registeruz.sk. Like the Commercial register of Slovakia, Obchodný register, it is clearly structured, user-friendly and has an English language version. Verifying a company there is very easy.

Importantly, in the Registry of Financial Statements of companies of Slovakia:

  • We can find financial statements of Slovak companies, state-owned enterprises, cooperatives and public entities.
  • We won’t find financial statements of individual entrepreneurs (natural persons) and non-profit organizations.

The latter economic entities are not obliged to publish their financial data.

Slovakia companies search in this database allows you to conveniently view, download and print the most important parts of financial statements — assets, current and trade receivables, accrued incomes, liabilities and equity and, of course, section that is invaluable in the risk management process, i.e. income statement (revenues, operating expenses, profits and losses).

In addition to the substantive value, it is quite likely that The Registry of Financial Statements of the Slovak Republic businesses will also make a surprising aesthetic impression on you. Compared to the ugly and rather crude trade registers that we can see in most EU countries, the financial browser of Slovak entities looks like an exemplary, modern open data database.

Types of companies in Slovakia

Like most EU Member States, Slovakia also has several main types of companies — cooperatives, sole proprietorships, European associations etc. But if we are talking about companies, i.e. business run by enterprises, not individual entrepreneurs, the most popular legal forms of entities in Slovakia today are, as we have already mentioned above:

  • Limited liability company (LCC) — minimal registered capital: 5.000 €
  • Joint stock company (JS) — minimal registered capital: 25.000 €
  • General partnership (GP) — registered capital is not required
  • Limited commercial partnership (LP) — the capital is obligatory only for 1 partner and its amount should be minimal 250 €.
