Social media excels at keeping friends and family in touch, but it’s also a fantastic way to forge valuable relationships and increase traffic for companies of all sizes. Organizations from giant mega corporations to small home workshops are all using social media platforms to build communities around their brand.

While social media can be used to create meaningful connections, it can also be a great way to increase traffic to your website. Here are ten strategies you can use today to increase visits to your blog through social media.

1. Make Your Content Shareable

Nobody is going to share content that doesn’t inspire, add value, or entertain them in some way. The best way to ensure your content receives clicks, likes, and shares is to make it relevant to your audience at an emotional level.

A study conducted by Jonah Berger, author of the bestseller “Contagious,” revealed that posts which inspire people to share content are ones which make them laugh, cry, or shake their fist.

Positive and uplifting posts are more likely to go viral, as are posts that tug on heartstrings or make people laugh. Content that incites anger can also trigger many shares, but you don’t want to increase traffic with this strategy due to the negative connotations.

2. Pay Attention to SEO

If you want your website content to have the most significant impact, you need to ensure that it is shared accurately. The increasing importance of social media and digital marketing makes it more critical that your SEO is on point.

The more your content appears in the search engines — with first page rankings attracting 72% of the traffic — the more likely it is to be shared. As your content appears on more people’s feeds, the more your social media traffic will grow.

3. Share the Same Content More Than Once

At first thought, you may think sharing content more than once isn’t far short of spamming. However, when you consider that your audience won’t all be on at the time you post, sharing content more than once can increase your exposure. You are more likely to reach users at times when they are most active on their favorite platforms.

When you’re posting multiple times and linking to the same article on your site, change up the content of your post, so it’s not always the same.

In fast-moving networks like Twitter, it’s easy for your audience to miss your post. Therefore, it makes sense to increase your frequency so more people have access to your material.

4. Tailor Your Content to Each Platform

Each platform has a preferred format for posts, especially when it comes to images. Some platforms are more visual than others, but an attractive image that enhances what you are trying to say will go a long way on all of them. Use an editor to ensure that each picture will look good on the respective platforms.

Twitter is for news junkies and people who like to keep up-to-date with what’s going on right now.

Facebook is a bit of a mixed bag so don’t be afraid to experiment with different types of content and see what gains traction.

Instagram is a visual platform which showcases experiences so use images which highlight those aspects of your company. People using your products are an excellent example of content that should work well on Instagram.

LinkedIn could almost be considered a more serious and formal version of Facebook. This site is all about professionalism, business savvy, and building profitable relationships, so no funny business.

5. Research Your Competitors

Checking out the competition is an excellent way to find out what’s working and what’s not. Scroll down your competitor’s feed and take note of the posts that are getting the most likes, clicks, shares, and impressions.

Emulate — not copy — the content that is attracting the most engagement by creating similar posts in your unique style.

6. Engage with Your Audience

One in three people will scurry off to your competitor if you ignore them on your social channels.

If you’re posting on social media but aren’t hanging around for the rest of the conversation, then you’re missing the point of the exercise.

Social media is all about connecting with your audience, and the best way to do that is to check in regularly to ask questions, answer questions, and provide helpful tips and advice.

7. Time Your Posts

Posting when most of your audience is offline is like showing up at a party after everyone’s gone home — you aren’t going to get much social traction.

People are active at different times on social media. Some hop on first thing in the morning while they eat breakfast, others check in during their lunch break or on the bus ride home, and some will flick through their feed during ad breaks on television or while lying in bed.

Creating the most engagement will require that you research your demographic to find out when the majority of them are most likely to be online. Posting at those times will ensure you are casting as wide a net as possible.

While every audience will be different and will require some trial and error, there is information available that will give you a general idea about the best times to post. Don’t forget to experiment as no two demographics are exactly alike.

8. Create Visually Attractive Posts

BuzzSumo examined more than 1 million blog posts to come up with a winning formula for attracting more shares. While the study focused mostly on articles, it does highlight the power of images when striving for content that is more shareable.

Blog posts with an image placed after every 75–100 words received the most shares. Interestingly, this statistic translates to Facebook and Twitter as well. Posts with 75–100 words of text and an image received between seven and forty-five more shares.

9. Include Calls to Action

Calls to action (CTA) can increase your click-through rate. People appreciate it when you tell them what to do. If you ask them to click, a lot of them will oblige you and visit your site simply because you made it clear about what action you wanted them to take.

10. Make it Easy to Share Content from Your Blog

Have you ever visited a web page that had excellent content you were busting to share with your social media followers, but there wasn’t a sharing icon in sight? Don’t make your audience jump through hoops to share your content.

Make sure you display prominent social share icons. If people have to go to any trouble to post your content on their platforms, most of them won’t.
