Joining the Revolution — How I Came to Be a Part of Trasso
It was early February 2017 and I had recently completed my undergraduate internship and was in the market for a proper full-time job. I was in the midst of browsing through some job offers when, on a whim, I decided to contact an old school friend who was working back in the same town as our Alma Mater.
During our conversation, the topic of jobs came up and my friend disclosed to me that his team was looking for a partner with backend development experience. I had a gut feeling that this was the opportunity I was searching for all along, so I immediately jumped the gun and told him that I was interested and was willing to move back to Kuching within the next couple of weeks.
Now there is something you should know about Kuching; It’s not as happening a place as Kuala Lumpur or Penang. In fact, you will barely hear about any tech-related companies or startups based in this small, sleepy town in the East Malaysian state of Sarawak. Hence, I was a bit sceptical at first and my friends in Kuala Lumpur advised me to accept the job offers in West Malaysia and gain some experience first and not move back to Kuching, but my gut feeling told me that I was making the right choice and boy was it right!
Any second thoughts I had about joining Trasso, disappeared after my first meeting with the other partners. The team was small but extremely accommodating and communicative. I felt immediately at home within the first few days. There was no micromanagement and I was free to make my own decisions and voice my opinions on the direction Trasso was taking.
Within the first week, I completely overhauled the existing backend system and started creating a completely new one utilising a more modern framework. It was scary at first, creating the whole system from scratch without someone experienced supervising what I was doing but as I progressed, I realised that it wasn’t all that difficult at all. Sure, I had to refer to lengthy API documentations and numerous tech blogs when I was stuck rather than relying on the experience of a supervisor but that gave me the opportunity to make mistakes and to learn from them.
It has been nearly 9 months since I joined Trasso and looking back at everything we have accomplished as a team since then, I can wholeheartedly say that joining Trasso was one of the best decisions of my life and I hope to continue growing with the amazing family that I have here.
