As we approach mid-January, there’s no escaping the fact that we have reached deepest, darkest mid-winter, and the sunny summer months ahead are but a dot on the horizon. You might be urging your summer holiday to come along faster — but instead of ushering fun in the sun, why not consider a wonderfully wintry break instead? There are some gorgeous winter terrains, experienced all the better during the winter months, a some gorgeous winter hotels to boot. So why not snuggle up in a cosy, winter hotel and admire some winsome winter beauty in our top ten winter wonderlands…

Finland

You can’t go wrong in North Europe during winter, as the landscapes are particularly suited to the winter months. Book into a cosy log cabin and experience nature at its prettiest and most chilled.

New York

New York is perhaps best experienced under a magic dust of snow. The city is at its most romantic during the early year months, with a whole host of activities to keep you busy, to boot.

Ontario, Canada

A deservedly popular winter destination; though one not for the faint of heart! Ontario experiences winters unlike any other, and is seeing a particularly frosty period, so wrap up warm!

York

A magical Northern city, rich in history and heritage, this is the perfect domestic winter destination. The cobbled streets are all the most charming with a hint of frost and there’s plenty of cosy, cute pubs and hotels to snuggle up in.

Oslo, Norway

Oslo offers stunning contemporary architecture and a host of exciting culture — that really gets going in the winter. A cute and surprisingly small city, perfect for that post-Christmas getaway.

Paris, France

We’ve all heard of Paris when it sizzles, but what about Paris when it snows?! Paris becomes a whimsical winter wonderland in the colder months, and looks absolutely stunning!

Lodz, Poland

This Polish city is increasingly becoming a tourist hot (or should we say, cold) spot, of choice, with those in the know. Amble around the cute streets, check out the film and modern art museums and experience a country that really knows how to ‘do winter’.

Iceland

There’s no other more quintessential winter destination than Iceland. Whether you want to sample city life in Reykjavik or visit the hot spas — this is your perfect pick.

Norwegian Fjords

A glacial inlet found on narrow crevices in Norway’s ruggedly mountainous terrain; the fjords look particularly beautiful when the water has frozen to ice.

St. Petersburg

For an experience unlike any other, brave St. Petersburg’s “white nights”: when the sunlight shines past midnight!
