Observations and Conversations From the Backseat of An Uber
Ridesharing connections, controversies and sustainable travel
“Where did you come from?” he asks.
The lights of Boston are blinding and my eyes are red. Droplets of rain lightly splash against the car windows just before my driver guides the sleek black Camry into the Ted Williams Tunnel that connects East Boston and Logan International Airport with the rest of the city.
“Trinidad,” I answer.
“Trinidad?” Eyes pop open wide in the review mirror and with uncanned enthusiasm his mouth breaks out in a beaming grin. “You came to Boston in December? From Trinidad?”
Rising well before dawn this morning to start my day’s travels, I’m exhausted but still giddy at the invitation to chat. Many times I opt for the bus or train as a way to be more economical and travel sustainably, but as one fellow traveler pointed out, sometimes you just have to treat yourself.
Not feeling like bringing up the subject of needing a break from a tempestuous marriage though I said: “Well, even the tropics can get old and I’ve always wanted to explore Boston.”
