Everyone knows you can’t run a travel publication if you don’t travel.

It’s that time of year again my friends, at least for this publisher.

I prefer to take my big trips in the fall. Often crowd sizes are smaller, and it’s better weather (all over the world) — out of the heat of summer and not yet into the cold of winter. (Vice versa in the Southern Hemisphere.)

Mexico City is like a magnet for me. I’ve felt its pull for a long time and dreamed of traveling there. I’ve been to Mexico a few times, like the Mayan Riviera and even Tijuana when I was a young teenager. But the country’s capital, Ciudad de Mexico, has always had a special appeal for me.

Its size is intimidating. Twenty-two million people live there. Two-thirds of the population in all of Canada. There is also the ongoing threat of gang/drug cartel violence in Mexico — although that is mostly in the border towns and cities.

When my friend was a flight attendant she would sometimes have a layover in Mexico City or Guadalajara and I was captivated by her stories. She was fearless and would take a taxi to some of the many open-air…
