A small building at the entrance to a campsite, painted with an elf and the words in French and English “Welcome to the Land of Legends.”
The entrance to our campsite near Huelgoat. All photos and videos are the property of the author.

It was following a long hiatus from camping that I decided to book my three children and me into a campsite in Brittany one summer.

I’d long had a love affair with France and had been blessed to live there for a period some years earlier. I’d also long had a love affair with sleeping under the stars and being out in nature. And then there was my love affair with French musical traditions.

For some time, I’d kept my adventuring to a minimum owing to the challenges of parenting three children, and single-parenting every single summer, owing to my partner working in the British tourist trade. Now a camping trip in one of the most delightful parts of France — merely a hop across the channel and on route to visit my sister’s family at their place in southern France — was the obvious choice, once I was ready for some more adventure. Or not merely ready, but positively itching for it.
