A couple wearing motorbike helmets and sunglasses smiles at the camera as they sit on their motorbike in heavy traffic on a busy street. Behind them are dozens of motorbikes, trucks, and cars, all at a standstill.

I stood on the roadside looking at the motorised scooter as horror pulsed through my veins. I was expecting one of those cool Vespas that you see cruising around the Amalfi coast in Italy. Instead, this one looked like it had been thrown together in some dodgy workshop by someone wearing an eye patch and partially blind in the other eye. A five-year-old could’ve built something safer with Lego.

My husband, Ramzi, was brimming with excitement. He stood proudly next to the fake Vespa, arms outstretched like he’d just won first prize on a game show. It had taken him two days to convince me to go for a ride with him. Tackling Bali’s traffic seemed like a death wish. It was every man for himself on those roads, no rules apply. The thought of ending up in a ditch, with broken legs and no one to find us for days, was far from my idea of a good time. That’s if we survived.

But it was our second honeymoon, and after the epic failure of our first one eighteen months earlier, we wanted this trip to be exceptional to make up for it.
