Again I say, if you think Moscow is only the Red Square, you need to get to know this city better. On this post, I share a suggestion of 6 places to visit in the Russian capital beyond the touristic clichets.

Ziferblat

Founded in Moscow by Ivan Meetin, it is a pioneering idea on the concept of anti-café. You pay for the time you stay at the place and not for what you consume. It is a mix of café and coworking with a home atmosphere, where clients receive a clock that marks the time they remain.

A perfect place if you want a coworking space, to join events and simply spend the time having coffee and tea. In Moscow, it is located at Tverskaya St, 12, стр. 1/Тверская Ул., 12, next to the metro station Pushkinskaya. There are also Ziferblat branches in Kiev (Ukraine), Kharkiv (Ukraine), Ljubljana (Slovenia), Kazan, Saint Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod.

Varenichinaya Nº1

In cyrillic, its name is Вареничная Nº1. Located at Nikolskaya Street (Никольская Ул.), next to the Red Square. There is another branch at Prospekt Mira, 119/Проспект Мира, 119, next to the metro station Tretyakovskaya. Its decoration is inspired on a typical old Russian apartment. Great food for good prices, especially considering the cost of living in Moscow. Nice place to try some of the Russian typical dishes.

Olenka

Olenka (in Russian, it’s pronounced “Alionka”) is the most traditional brand of chocolates and candies in Russia. There is a store at Nikolskaya Street (Никольская Ул.), next to the Red Square.

GUM (ГУМ)

Located in front of Red Square. It used to be a residential and commercial building during the regime of Josef Stalin and later it was used as a state department store during the Soviet period. Nowadays, it is a shopping mall with fancy brands. A must thing to do is to visit the restaurant Stolovaya Nº 57, located on the last floor.

Teremok (Tepemok in cyrillic)

Franchise of local fast food. The interesting point is the opportunity to try “Bilni” (in cyrillic, Билны), pancake on local style with different tastes.

Shocoladinitsa (Шоколадница)

Café among those frequented by moscovites. If you love pies, candies, tea and coffee, it is a great place to spend the time.
