Review: Singapore Airlines A380 First Class Suites from Singapore to London

After a few days in Singapore it was to finally time go home and time for our second leg on the A380 in Suites Class from Singapore (SIN) to London Heathrow (LHR). A solid 13 hour flight and ideal to fully indulge in the luxury. Unfortunately we could only book the 9 am flight with the old Suites and not the evening flight with the new ones. But we were in for a treat again. More on that later.

We booked a ride with a Grab 6 seater to the airport. It just fit all our luggage and the two of us. Make sure to tell the driver to turn left before arriving at the terminal to get to the Singapore First Class check-in area. We did not have any issues, but according to other reviews it can be easily missed. The arrival at the airport feels like a high end 5 star hotel. Your bags are taken care of by porters and you are directed into the check in lounge. There you take a seat until all formalities are taken care of. Our luggage took some time to be sorted, but sure enough 4 x 32.9kg were not an issue.

With our boarding passes and Private Room invitations we headed to the First Class immigration screening point, which leads directly into the terminal and is located conveniently in front of the lounges.

I covered the Singapore Airlines Private Room in a previous review, so I’ll just add a few more pictures from this visit. We just had breakfast and a glass of the 2009 Dom Perignon. It’s 5 o’clock somewhere, right?

We headed to the gate in time for boarding and were through security in no time. Once again we boarded the plane via the dedicated Suites jetbridge. A member of the crew ran towards us just to take my wife’s luggage, not without apologizing that he couldn’t also take my carry on bag.

On this flight we had double the passengers in First Class as on our first leg from Melbourne to Singapore: four. There was an elderly couple traveling with us. They occupied suites 1A and 2A. We had our usual double suite, seats 3D and 3C in the middle. 2004 Krug champagne was promptly served and we had some time to settle in before departure. I used the time and my private aisle to take some photos. For take-off I sat in the window seat next to mine.

Individual air nozzles, the fold-out bed and plenty of windows for yourself.

Shortly after take-off it was time for a second breakfast. We had pre-booked a meal via “Book the Cook”.

Fruit platter and waffles

After this quick meal, the crew offered to prepare the double bed in the front middle seats again, which we happily accepted. Obviously the elderly couple spent enough time together in their lifetimes to not wanting to share an airline bed…

There was not much to watch on the IFE, we had not seen yet, so we powered up our own inflight entertainment. We watched one or two episodes of suits in our suite, but the regular Krug refills and the comfortable bedding soon led to the inevitable: a solid and long nap.

After we woke up, the crew offered to serve dinner in our day suite. We had pre-booked Beef Tenderloin and Lobster Thermidor via Book the Cook. My wife had caviar, which I tasted, but still found awful. I had an excellent pate and some sate. Followed by lobster soup and a fresh salad. I ended the meal with a cheese platter.

After landing in London Heathrow, we were the first to exit the plane and there was a guy with a sign with our name on it. He asked, if we needed any assistance. I declined and asked him to just point us to the Lufthansa lounge for our onward flight. Well, he did not point, but bring us all the way there. Shortcutting every line in the way (“These are first class passengers, get out of the way”). It was kind of cool and embarrassing at the same time. But after a 13 hour flight well appreciated. Despite my extensive research before the flight, I did not know about this arrival service.

While the Lufthansa lounge was not as swanky as the Private Room, it felt like home, as they had Kartoffelsalat and fresh German beer. Better than lobster after 2 years abroad. Our onward flight was booked in Eurowings Bizzclass. Essentially first row seats with extra luggage and lounge access. Quite the downgrade, but alright for the last 2 hours.

When we booked the flight, we were torn between booking business class and keeping enough miles for a business class flight from Frankfurt to New York or flying Singapore Suites. We did not regret this decision. It’s an incredible experience and it brings back good memories from time to time. We hope we can experience it again. Business class feels cramped now… #firstworldproblems
