  1. Cafe hop — The cafe culture of Helsinki outstanding, after all the Fins drink more coffee than anyone else. Great cafes can be found in all the districts but the best coffee is served in Kallio.
  2. Ateneum — The home of Finnish art is located in this wonderful building opposite the main train station.
  3. Suomenlinna — Catch the public ferry (included in the Helsinki public transport network) across to the island fort originally built by the Swedes and then beefed up by the Russians. Head to the southern tip of the islands to see the most impressive fortifications and the pitch black tunnels that wind underneath.
  4. Ride like a local — The city is custom built for cyclists and the compact centre makes this method of transport ideal. For the extra touch make sure you get around with one of the classic Scandinavian designs.
  5. Design District — Nordic design is world class and there is no better show case than the Design District west of the old town. The best stretch is along the southern part of Fredrikinkatu and along Bulevardi. Pick up one of the well designed flyer/maps highlighting the top tips for the area.
