Travelnitch is a nonprofit inspiring kids through virtual and real-world travel. These future explorers have the power to transform the world, but the work begins at home—right in our own backyard.

We believe spending time in the great outdoors can spark a passion for travel. In fact, we think of it as the gateway to global travel. If you’re a writer looking to inspire families to #getoutside and see what mother nature has to offer, then you’re in the right place!

Here are the kinds of stories we ❤ to read:

1. Roughing It

Roughing It will feature fun & inspiring stories about families taking to the wilderness and sleeping under the stars. Possible topics include: the risks and rewards of camping with kids, campgrounds that cater to families, and ways to show your kids that “roughing it” can be an adventure of a lifetime. We want to prove to parents that outdoor travel with kids doesn’t have to be hard and the benefits far outweigh the challenges.

2. In Your Backyard

Traveling doesn’t have to mean luxury accommodations or even an overnight stay. Sometimes, exploring close to home is enough to get your kids excited about the possibilities. If you have stories about how staycationing has gotten your little ones excited about travel, please share!

3. Travelnitch Hikes

A passion for travel doesn’t always begin with that meticulously planned trip abroad. For many of us, the seed is planted when we are very little, before we can even appreciate art museums and culinary tours. Hiking in the great outdoors can act as a gateway for more exotic travel later in life. If your family has a special connection with mother nature, tell us about it. Let’s inspire other families to get out and about!

Become a Contributor

If you’ve got a story to share send me an email, including a link to your (unpublished) story, with the subject line “I would like to write for Travelnitch Outdoors.” If we like what we read, you’ll be added as a writer and asked to submit your story.

We are a new publication, so our Medium following will take time to grow, but this is a great opportunity for aspiring writers looking to expand their writing portfolio. Articles will be shared widely across all of our social channels, and may be cross-linked to our website.

Locked articles are eligible for curation, so there’s always the chance your work will be selected for distribution by Medium.

Writer’s Guidelines

We appreciate clear, quality writing. Spellcheck was created for a reason—use it, please. Stories with too many spelling and/or grammatical errors will be rejected. Absolutely no clickbait or affiliate links.

Refer to Medium’s curation guidelines:

“Curators are looking for thoughtful, clearly written pieces that tell a compelling story, convey an interesting idea, or share a smart point of view. These can take many forms …We explicitly do not want to distribute misinformation, stories with clickbait headlines, stories that are primarily marketing a product or service, stories that use photos that the author doesn’t have the rights to use, or stories with excessive typos and errors.”

Tagging Your Story

Let’s be honest, if your story does not include an ‘outdoors’ or ‘travel’ tag, it probably doesn’t belong in Travelnitch Outdoors.

Give Credit Where Credit is Due

If you include photos, always provide proper attribution. Try Pixabay or Unsplash for free stock photography. A picture is worth a thousand words!

I am excited to grow this publication with your help. Medium is such a great platform for travel writers, but there’s so much more we could be doing to reach families.
