Example: Micros adds chips to its Epson printers and the terminals they connect to (POS market). Sole purpose — to prevent using non-Micros branded and chipped printers with the systems.

Single channel protectionism and exclusivity is the opposite mindset of open-source platforms.

In this case, it feels sticky like over-hyped fruit fluid and looks like fearful high-servants spending creativity keeping others from befriending the top of the pyramid they entertain.
