There is hardly a better place to get a ‘free’ view of the London skyline than the top floor of the Tate Modern, which provides a sweeping 360 degree view. You can spot St.Paul’s cathedral, The Monument (to the Great Fire of London), Canary Wharf, Tower of London, the shard and quite a few bridges.
We realised it later in the day, by which time we had gone all the way up the narrow spiral staircases of the Monument (after paying 5 pounds..worth it,but), which is not as tall as this. The other option to view the skyline is the shard, for which you will have to shell out around 30 pounds.

oh well, the galleries (except the premium ones) at Tate are also free. Everyone from Warhol to Guerrilla Girls to Dali.
