Taking advantage of blockchain technology, Colombian coffee lovers can now follow the coffee bean they consume to their origin on a platform designed to contribute to greater traceability, efficiency and equity in the coffee supply chain.

1850 Coffee®, a brand of the J. M. Smucker company, in alliance with Farmer Connect, announced a new era of transparency in the coffee production chain, through its offer of 100% Colombian coffee.

The alliance announcement reports that consumers can now easily scan a QR code on the coffee bag and their device will direct them to the website that provides information on where the coffee was grown, processed and exported. They will also be able to access more information on Farmer Connect projects underway to support coffee growers and their families in Colombia, such as: supplying drinking water for schools, school supplies for local schools and agriculture initiatives.

Through the blockchain platform, consumers have access to unprecedented transparency and can participate in a global circular economy, in which consumers can be directly involved in the farming communities that produce their food and beverages. This transparency is achieved through the use of blockchain to record data about each step in the supply chain in the coffee journey. Information about these events is recorded in an immutable ledger, creating increased responsibility for coffee producers and their supply chain partners and helping to ensure that products are what they say they are.
