We are team Treecko, a student capstone project group from the MHCI program at Carnegie Mellon University. We are partnered with Troutwood to find opportunities that empower individuals with tools and knowledge to plan and take control of their financial future.

The Importance of Jobs to be Done when Designing Financial Action for Young Adults

Designing a solution that resonates with young adults and empowers them to take control of their finances requires a deep understanding of their needs and aspirations. For this sprint, we challenged ourselves to consider values of financial action that truly meets the requirements of this dynamic demographic.

In order to develop an effective solution, we turned to the Jobs to be Done (JTBD) framework, a powerful tool that helps us uncover the underlying motivations and goals that drive young adults to take financial action. We utilized the JTBD framework to design a service that aligns with the needs and objectives of young adults, enabling them to take charge of their financial future.

Value in Designing Information for Clarity and Decision Making

For our next step, the team began to focus on creating a well-structured information architecture, arranging information to be logical and caters to the specific needs of young adults wanting to improve their financial wellness. Our goal from this framework was to provide a clear pathway for students to complete their desired actions: such as setting financial goals, tracking expenses, or making investments. This exercise helped us clearly define what information is important and would bring the most value to the user so Troutwood can meet their needs.

Putting it all together

In our pursuit of empowering young adults towards financial independence, Team Treecko has embarked on an exciting journey of research, prototyping, and testing. After weeks of diverging and converging, we have reached a pivotal moment where our ideas are coming together, shaping a singular prototype that caters to the desired needs of young adults seeking financial empowerment.

Our focus has been on understanding the jobs young adults require from Troutwood in their pursuit of financial independence. We recognize the significance of creating a large flow experience that encompasses contextual relevance, engaging onboarding, goal orientation, supportive guidance, and flexibility. Through our prototype, we aim to provide users with a structured and captivating journey, one that transforms their experience with money into a joyful and rewarding experience, ultimately leading to successful financial outcomes.

The process of diverging and converging in the last few weeks has allowed us to explore different possibilities and gather valuable insights from various participant groups. We have conducted extensive research and testing, ensuring that our prototype aligns with the needs, aspirations, and challenges faced by young adults on their financial journeys. By combining our diverse perspectives and expertise, we have converged on a solution that reflects the collective knowledge of our team and the desires of our target audience.

converging our prototype concepts together

As we move forward, we are eager to put our prototype to the test. We want to assess its effectiveness in delivering contextual relevance, providing an engaging onboarding experience, fostering goal orientation, offering supportive guidance, and accommodating the flexibility required by young adults. By continuously refining our design and incorporating user feedback, we aim to create a financial journey that resonates with our users, encourages their active participation, and ultimately empowers them to achieve their financial goals.

We understand that their journey towards financial independence can be both exciting and challenging, and our goal is to provide young adults with the necessary tools and support along the way.

Team Treecko is excited about the possibilities that lie ahead. Stay tuned as we continue to refine and validate our prototype, ensuring that every step of the way, we are meeting the evolving needs of our users and empowering them to take charge of their financial futures.
