“We’re the first generation to feel the impact of climate change and the last generation that can do something about it.” ~ Barack Obama, Former American President

2019 is one of the hottest years in human history, with heatwaves across Europe and the US. In fact, several European countries, including Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands, recorded their hottest day to date. The changing climate across the globe has sparked a new array of discussions, seeking the most suitable solution for the critical, growing climate emergency. Let’s identify the best solution and how different countries and organizations are implementing it.

Solutions to stop climate change

“The restoration of trees remains among the most effective strategies for climate change mitigation.” ~ Study published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science

Isn’t it surprising that we were all aware of the solution against climate change right from the beginning? Several studies have found tree plantation to be the most affordable of all the climate preservation strategies available at the moment. The good news is that different nations are already dedicating resources towards tree plantation and afforestation.

Nations excelling in tree plantation

As per the records of the Plant-for-the-Planet’s initiative, Trillion Tree Campaign, here are the countries that have planted the most number of trees in the past five years:

Notable tree plantation projects

Additionally, several national governments, organizations, and individuals are leading massive tree plantation drives around the world. Here is a list of some of the notable projects:

  • The Trillion Tree Campaign: This is one of the most interesting of all the tree plantation projects. The campaign was started by nine-year-old Felix Finkbeiner, in 2007. Finkbeiner founded the “Plant for the Planet”- movement in 2007. Within the first three years of its establishment, the initiative planted its one-millionth tree in 2010. The association was given the responsibility for the United Nations Environment Program or UNEP’s Billion Tree Campaign. The foundation maintains an online tracker for its Trillion Tree Campaign. The current plantations stand at 13.6 billion trees.
  • Bonn Challenge: The Bonn Challenge is another noteworthy effort towards fighting climate changes through tree plantation. More than 48 countries have joined hands under the initiative to reforest and restore 350 million hectares of affected forest area by 2030.
  • Planting 73 Million Trees in Amazon: Amazon is one of the most diverse and crucial ecosystems of the world. But it has witnessed massive deforestation over the past couple of decades. Conservation International is one of the foundations working on reforesting the depleted forest covers in the Amazon. The foundation aims to plant 73 million trees across different Brazilian states, reforesting roughly 70,000 acres of land in the process.

How TreeCoin is a part of this movement

TreeCoin is an initiative that plans to bring sustainable timber production to Paraguay. The project aims to plant over 37 million trees throughout its project cycle, restoring over 59,000 hectares of land in the process. TreeCoin is eyeing to establish a sustainable resource utilization model that can inspire other companies, operating in Paraguay or anywhere else, to follow the lead.
