Cosmetic lotions produced by personal care product giants, such as Johnson and Johnson, Unilever, L’Oreal, etc., are adapting to the growing body of evidence against the controversial use of endocrine disrupting chemical ingredients. More commercial lotions are now labeled and advertised as “paraben-free” or “phthalate-free”. However, one can never be too sure about the other ingredients that go into such products. So what do you do? The first step is to do your own research on your cosmetic products, even start throwing out products that you do not need. However, not everyone has the time or resources to be informed about the complexity of chemical toxicity and product composition. So, the next best solution is to go organic.

Why use organic lotion? The skin is the largest organ in the body, yet it is the most susceptible to foreign chemical exposure. Thus, it makes perfect sense to be more knowledgeable and informed about the products that you are applying onto your skin. However, this becomes extremely hard and tedious when the names of half of the ingredients in your daily use lotion, are completely beyond comprehension. Fortunately, organic body and face lotions are now storming the cosmetic lotion market, and all made from nutrient-dense natural ingredients (such as coconut oil, shea butter, and other seed oils).

Rose Velvet Body Lotion — https://www.odylique.com/rosevelvetbodylotion.html

Its ingredients include aloe Vera juice, coconut and cocoa bean butters, cold-pressed avocado and and sunflower oils, Non-palm plant glycerin, Rose and Rose geranium essential oils, Rosehip, Rosemary, Plant origin moisturizers & emulsifiers. This company advertises 100% natural ingredients and 93% organic, which is about as organic as you can get, considering ingredients such as glycerin and emulsifiers are a necessity in personal care products. Although not completely organic, it is completely free from parabens, phthalates, artificial fragrance, petroleum, mineral oil, glycols, sulphates and all other potentially toxic chemicals. You can see all of its certifications on the link provided above.

However, there are still many companies that advertise “organic” and “natural” products on the market, yet they are still filled with synthetic preservatives and fillers that are not the healthiest choice for your skin. Unfortunately, there are many independent certifiers and scientific committees that can advertise “natural” or “organic” certification, but this can mean absolutely nothing in terms of product ingredient integrity. Look for USDA-Certified organic labels, since this is a government established label that guarantees product ingredient integrity.

Nourish Organic Rejuvenating Rose Butter — https://www.vitacost.com/nourish-organic-rejuvenating-rose-butter?csrc=PPCADW-&mtp=sSKvLIO7O-dc|pcrid|166844093177|&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIjb6Hj4qW3AIVybrACh0e-gqWEAAYASAAEgJwavD_BwE

This product is completely USDA-Certified organic. It uses natural ingredients (see link) that removes dirt, makeup, bacteria and oil from the skin. In addition to the lack of endocrine disrupting chemicals, it is also free of gluten, GMOs, animal testing and animal ingredients. It is by far the greatest choice for a completely chemical free body lotion and ultimately, a peace of mind.

However, looking at the ingredients for yourself is a good start! A good rule of thumb is that if there are more than 5 ingredients (or if you cannot pronounce an ingredient easily) then chances are it is not a natural or organic product. The website https://www.ewg.org/skindeep/ is a useful resource if you want to find out more about the ingredients included in your products. It allows you to enter the name of any cosmetic product in the website database and it lists all of the individual ingredients and their respective level of toxicity. There are many easy resources available on the internet as well, all it takes is a little bit of motivation to be more informed about the products that are intimately tied to our daily routine.
