Karnataka is home to the beautiful Western ghats, with its amazing vegetation you feel as if you are traveling from thick and dense forests to sprawling grasslands and you get to experience many seasons during the same trek.

Here is my list of top treks you ought to do in Karnataka.

  1. Kumara Parvatha Trek

This is my all time favorite, even after having visited it thrice can’t get enough of it. The best time to visit is post monsoon when the forest is green and filled with leeches ;)

Kumara Parvatha is nestled in near the famous Kukke Subramanyam temple which is almost a pilgrimage for most people in the South.

It is the second highest peak in Coorg after Tadiondamol peak. Getting to the start point is very easy you can take an over night bus to Kukke Subramanyam.

Camping is not allowed on the peak since last year because of incidents of carelessness owing to forest fires, however you can camp near the forest office which has ample space make sure you call up the forest office before embarking on the trek to find if its open or not.

The first 5kms through the forest is quite challenging mainly because of humidity and dense forest cover, make sure you carry enough water to last the 5 kms. Total trek distance is 14 kms one way

2. Kudremukha Trek

Nestled in the Kudremukh national park, the trek is one of the most scenic treks in Karnataka, you pass through so many streams of water the water is pristine and a treat to watch.

The trek is around 10 kms one way and camping is not allowed on the peak, plus a guide is compulsory if you are going with your friends and haven’t been there before.

The base village for the trek is Mullodi, you can set up your camp in one of the houses by taking permission make sure you call the person before hand as it can get crowded in peak season.

Kudremukh peak is at an elevation of 1892 metres approx. You ought to do this trek if you live in Karnataka.

3. Kodachadri Trek

The kodachadri trek located near the town of Shimoga, has three routes to start your trek from the most amazing being passing through the magnificent and towering Hidulmane water falls. Kodachadri peak is the 10th highest in Karnataka located at an elevation of 1343m.

You can take a dip in these falls, the experience will be surreal. It is situated in the Mookambika national park. You can ascend via the falls route which has a sharp climb in the end and descend via the Santosh hotel(dhaba) route. A temple dedicated to the Ancient Mother Goddess Mookambika is located near the top of the peak. Camping is not allowed at the peak but around 5 kms before the peak you can find a small guest house make sure you call swami (person incharge) if you require food and accommodation.

The food and chai provided was delicious.
