AI-powered startup partners with Porsche to create new EV battery materials
A new research partnership between Aionics, a startup that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to speed up battery research, and Cellforce, a German battery maker that is a subsidiary of Porsche, aims to create new electrolyte materials for electric vehicle (EV) batteries.
Electrolyte materials are one of the three critical building blocks of lithium-ion batteries, which act as the courier to move ions between the electrodes when charging and discharging. The performance, safety, and cost of batteries depend largely on the choice of electrolyte materials.
However, finding the optimal electrolyte materials for a specific application is a daunting task, as there are billions of possible molecules to choose from. Traditional methods of battery research rely on trial-and-error experiments, which are time-consuming and expensive.
This is where Aionics comes in. The startup, founded in 2020 by Venkat Viswanathan and Austin Sendek, uses AI to accelerate battery discovery and design. Aionics uses AI-accelerated…
