Charles Martinet, the voice of Mario, retires after living out of a suitcase for five years

Charles Martinet, the voice actor who has been the voice of Mario in Nintendo games since 1994, has announced his retirement from voice acting. He will remain a Mario ambassador for Nintendo, but will no longer voice the iconic plumber and his friends.

“Charles Martinet has been the original voice of Mario in Nintendo games for a long time, as far back as Super Mario 64,” Nintendo said in a message posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, today. “Charles is now moving into the brand-new role of Mario Ambassador. With this transition, he will be stepping back from recording character voices for our games, but he’ll continue to travel the world sharing the joy of Mario and interacting with you all!

Martinet, who also voiced other characters such as Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and Baby Mario, said he was grateful to Nintendo and the fans for the amazing adventure.
