Legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola has praised the box office success of two original movies, Barbie and Oppenheimer, as a sign of a new golden age of cinema.

‘Barbenheimer’ created a sense of community in the theaters, which is what needs to continue in order to keep cinema alive, Greg Marcus of Marcus Theaters says.

The movies, which have been dubbed as “Barbenheimer” by the media and fans, have grossed over $1.2 billion worldwide so far, and have drawn large audiences to the theaters despite the pandemic.

Barbie is a live-action comedy directed by Greta Gerwig and starring Margot Robbie as the iconic doll, who embarks on a series of adventures in a whimsical world. Oppenheimer is a biographical drama directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy as the physicist who was pivotal in developing the first atomic bomb.

Coppola, who was a key figurehead in the New Hollywood filmmaking movement of the 1960s and 1970s, with classics such as The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, shared his thoughts on his Instagram Stories.

“I have yet to see them, but the fact that people are filling big theaters to see them and that they are neither sequels nor prequels, no number attached to them, meaning they are true one-offs, is a victory for cinema,” Coppola wrote.

He also expressed his optimism that we are on the verge of a golden age of moviegoing, with wonderful and illuminating cinema seen in large theaters.

“My hunch is that we’re on the verge of a golden age. Wonderful and illuminating cinema seen in large theaters,” he added.

Coppola’s comments contrast with his previous criticism of Marvel movies, which he called “despicable” and “formulaic”, and his preference for original and risky films.

“There used to be studio films. Now there are Marvel pictures. And what is a Marvel picture? A Marvel picture is one prototype movie that is made over and over and over and over and over again to look different,” he told GQ last year.

He also defended Martin Scorsese when the filmmaker came under fire for saying that films within the Marvel cinematic universe weren’t “real films,” with Coppola saying at a 2019 press conference that “Martin was being kind when he said it wasn’t cinema … He didn’t say it was despicable, which is what I say.”

Coppola is currently working on his long-in-the-works film Megalopolis, which he hopes to release in theaters soon. The film is described as an epic story of an architect’s quest to rebuild New York City after a disaster.

Barbie and Oppenheimer are still playing in theaters worldwide. Don’t miss the chance to see these original movies on the big screen.
