Disney Plus, the popular streaming service that offers access to Disney, Marvel, Star Wars, and Pixar content, is cracking down on password sharing among its subscribers in Canada. The company announced the change in an email, saying that it is against its policies to share accounts or login credentials outside of one’s household. The new policy will require users to verify their account via email or text message every few months, depending on how often they use the service.

The company also updated its subscriber agreement, stating that it may monitor the use of accounts and limit or terminate access if the agreement is violated. The move follows a similar crackdown by Netflix, which charges extra fees for additional users outside the primary household. Disney Plus is also raising its prices and introducing an ad-supported tier to boost its revenues.

“We have an opportunity to increase ARPU (average revenue per user) in a number of ways,” said Disney CEO Bob Chapek in August. “We’re going to be very careful about how we do that because we want to make sure that we don’t do anything that would have a negative impact on our value proposition,” he added.

Disney Plus has been one of the most successful streaming services in recent years, reaching over 116 million subscribers worldwide as of July 2021. However, the company faces increasing competition from rivals such as Amazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and Peacock. By limiting password sharing, Disney Plus hopes to reduce piracy and increase its subscriber base.

However, some users may not be happy with the change, especially if they share their account with friends or family members who live in different locations. Some may also find the verification process inconvenient or intrusive. Others may opt for cheaper or more flexible alternatives.

Disney Plus password-sharing crackdown is about to begin — what you need to know. The company has not announced when it will implement the policy in other markets, but it is likely that it will expand it soon. For now, Canadian users have until November 1st to prepare for the change.
