SanDisk, a subsidiary of Western Digital, is facing a serious issue with its portable SSDs. Some users have reported that their SanDisk Extreme V2 and Extreme Pro V2 drives have been wiping data and becoming unreadable since at least April 2023. A firmware update released by the company in May 2023 did not fix the problem, as some users and tech publications have reported losing data even after updating their drives.

The cause of the issue is still unknown, but some users have speculated that it may be related to the encryption feature, the USB-C cable, or the power management of the drives. Some users have been able to recover their data using third-party software or professional services, but others have not been so lucky.

SanDisk has not provided any official explanation or solution for the issue, and has been silent on its website and social media platforms. When Tech Publisher Ars contacted SanDisk about the issue, a company representative said:

“Western Digital is aware of reports indicating some customers have experienced an issue with 4TB SanDisk Extreme and/or Extreme Pro portable SSDs (SDSSDE61–4T00 and SDSSDE81–4T00 respectively). We have resolved the issue and will publish a firmware update to our website soon. Customers with questions or who are experiencing issues should contact our Customer Support team for assistance.”

Some of the users who have experienced the data loss have shared their frustration and disappointment with SanDisk.

“The problem is that I don’t know what caused this. I don’t know if it’s a hardware issue or a software issue. I don’t know if it’s related to encryption or not. I don’t know if it’s safe to use the drive again or not.” — A user named John who lost his data on a SanDisk Extreme Pro V2 drive

“I contacted SanDisk support and they told me to update the firmware and try again. I did that and nothing changed. They then told me to send the drive to them for a replacement. I asked them if they could recover my data and they said no.” — A user named Lisa who lost her data on a SanDisk Extreme V2 drive

SanDisk’s portable SSDs are supposed to be fast, durable, and secure devices that can store large amounts of data. However, the data loss issue has tarnished their reputation and trustworthiness. It remains to be seen how SanDisk will address this issue and restore its customers’ confidence.
