In this post, I will briefly talk about the Trendyol Technology team and the recruitment process within our Engineering Management teams. At the end of my article, I will share my suggestions, which I believe will be helpful for the candidates to take part in our processes.

Our Technology team, consisting of 2000+ people, is growing rapidly. As Trendyol teams, our values are the secret to our success. While getting our teams bigger, we recruit teammates who will embrace our values.

Our Technology Organization and Team Structure

A team of 2000+ people, a Scrum team of 240+

Our engineering management team of 1300+ people is divided under the roof of 15 main domains. In each scrum team, our teammates work together as developers, developers in test, and product managers.

Our Scrum teams act autonomously. They decide on the advantages/disadvantages of technology, infrastructure, and processes by themselves by carrying out POCs. Our Technology Development team focuses on prioritizing productivity through a technology-agnostic approach.

Tech — HR Recruitment Processes

Our HR team focuses fully on the Technology team at Trendyol: Tech HR.

As the Tech HR team, we design the recruitment processes in cooperation with technology teams and take action by deciding together on each step. We mostly prefer LinkedIn. In addition to that, we use alternative channels such as Stackoverflow, Github, Meetup, Social Media (Twitter, Youtube, etc.), and Bootcamp to reach new teammates from the sector.

We receive over 4500+ applications and interview with nearly 650 people monthly. 43 new teammates join our teams monthly. One of the most important criteria of the recruitment process is to fit into Trendyol's culture, which is a must for us. For this reason, we try hard to be very selective in this regard. Our interview processes consist of 5 stages in total:

Interview Process

1.Stage: Interview

Pre-interview: For the first stage of the recruitment process, we talk with the candidates on the phone and focus on learning more about the technologies they are currently using, their motivation for working at Trendyol, and how they improve themselves. The first interview is scheduled online via Zoom, with the candidates assessed favorably at this stage.

First Interview: Within the scope of our first interview, we assess our candidates in terms of fit to Trendyol by considering Trendyol's culture and values and focusing on their current projects and the technology they use. At this stage, we aim to get to know our candidates, explain Trendyol's targets and culture, and answer their questions about Trendyol Tech. One teammate from the Technology and Tech-HR teams attend this interview together.

2. Stage: Case/Assignment/Test/Inventory Sharing

We share cases/assignments with the candidates assessed to be favorable at the first interview in compliance with their technical level and proficiency. Once the candidates finalize the case, our technology team reviews the case study, and as the HR — Tech team, we inform our candidates according to the assessment result. In addition, we are considering using a personality inventory assessment according to the role's requirements.

3. Stage: Technical Interview

Candidates, the case study of whom is assessed to be favorable, are invited to the technical interview. As our colleagues from Tech teams pair with the candidate and discuss how to improve the solution, we attempt to get to know the technical capabilities of our candidate more through this interview.

4. Stage: English Proficiency Test

Before the final interview, candidates undergo an English proficiency test to ensure effective communication within our global team.

5. Stage: Final Interview

For the final stage, the Final Interview is made with our teammates in our Technology team in charge of domains. For the final interview, we interview our candidates again about their capabilities, capacities, technical background, and career targets and receive their feedback on the recruitment process. At this stage, we decide on which team our candidates will continue the recruitment process and provide detailed information about the projects of the relevant team.

Offer Process

The reference check step is organized for the candidates whose interview processes are completed, and the offer process starts for the selected candidates after the references are completed.

For our recruitment processes, we use :

  • Lever for candidate data and tracking
  • GitHub for case-sharing with the candidates
  • Codility & Trello for assessment and follow-up of candidate case assessments

As Trendyol Technology team, we always believe in continuous development, improving our processes, and striving to improve.

  • For the case assessments, we receive at least two opinions from our Technology team, make the assessments, and get back to our candidates accordingly.
  • Once our interview processes are finalized, we send a survey to all candidates for them to give us feedback. We assess data to improve our processes and take action.
  • At the end of each stage, we contact the candidate within at least 1 (one) week and take care of informing our candidates about their processes.
  • As Trendyol teams, we believe in establishing title-independent teams, open communication, and feedback. We also strive to reflect our values and culture to our candidates during the interview process as much as possible.
  • For example, we do not believe in a hierarchy within Trendyol teams and do not use expressions such as “you in formal meaning, we, Mr., ms., Mrs.” During our interview processes, we obtain the consent of our candidates and opt for removing the titles mutually 😊.
  • In addition to that, we take care of sharing our assessment processes and feedback with our candidates requesting feedback as the result of the interviews.
  • We carry out all our interviews and recruitment process via online platforms.
