My Dear Fellow Data
Hello, I am Özge from the Trendyol Product Management team. I have been working in Trendyol since 2017. I love what we do, the influence we create and Trendyol culture. I am happy to feel that I am an important part of the process. In this article, I will try to describe Trendyol and how data and iteration mean so much for us from my own perspective.
When I think about how working at Trendyol is; what comes to my mind is the dynamic, solution-oriented, friendly, easy-going and funny colleagues of mine who love their jobs, always aim for the better to understand the needs of users correctly and meet them. We all love solving problems and being a part of the solution, and take pleasure in that. In such an environment, productivity and learning constantly are inevitable, we are constantly renewed and improved. I am sure this will go on like that, because there are still many things we want to do. Well, how do we do this, how do we find solutions and how do we make decisions?
For a long period of my life, I have had difficulty in making decisions. Even in college, for example, I took numerous classes to make the right decision at the right time. However, today I can make tens of decisions within the day very easily. Because my biggest assistant -probably my favorite side of Trendyol- is dear “Data”. Speaking with data always brings us a great benefit, and even if it is sometimes difficult to understand it, it always stands beside us and gives us a hint to move forward. It is very kind and we, as Trendyol, respect it very much.
When you get along well with data, you not only better understand what your customers want but also find out in how many steps you need to make an improvement if you need to do, and where you should stop. Since we always want to improve, there is always a point B that we want to reach when we are at point A that we are located in. There may be many different ways to go from A to B. And we do not know if the point B we dream of is really what our user needs before arriving at there. For example, we have worked with a great persistence for months only to see that our users do not want this, we were mistaken and what they wanted was not B. All those efforts went down the drain! But do not worry, we also have a solution to avoid encountering this situation. Iteration and, of course, data. So how do we do it?
First of all, we select the most basic improvement area in the current status. We perform the necessary improvement and offer our A1 version to users. We try to understand if we are on the right track by analyzing A/B data in detail. If everything is alright, we proceed with A2 version and approach to B. However, if our users are not satisfied with A1, we do not proceed with A2 before correcting the most important part; we understand where we have done wrong and try to proceed correctly from the scratch by finding a formula suitable for it. As a result of these iterations, our initial dream of B turns into B+ version and we have done it with our users. We understand them better with every iteration and can proceed with C, D versions, taking confident steps.
What I try to explain is that doing business in the way I work makes us think constantly and sparkle like diamonds. The number of fields that we implement these processes and make differences also increases day by day. Selamlar, ben Trendyol Product Management ekibinden Özge, 2017'den beri Trendyol’da çalışıyorum. Yaptığımız işleri, yarattığımız etkiyi ve Trendyol kültürünü çok seviyorum, sürecin önemli bir parçası olduğumu hissetmekten mutluluk duyuyorum. Bu yazıda benim gözümden Trendyol’u ve bizim için data ve iterasyonun ne kadar önemli olduğunu anlatmaya çalışacağım.
Trendyol’da çalışmak deyince aklıma; dinamik, çözüm odaklı, samimi ve işini seven, kullanıcıların ihtiyacını doğru anlayıp karşılamak için her zaman daha iyisini hedefleyen, iyi niyetli ve eğlenceli arkadaşlarım geliyor. Hepimiz problem çözmeyi ve çözümün parçası olmayı çok seviyoruz ve bundan keyif alıyoruz. Böyle bir ortamda iş üretmek de sürekli öğrenmek de kaçınılmaz, durmaksızın yenileniyor ve gelişiyoruz. Bu şekilde devam edeceğine eminim, çünkü daha yapmak istediğimiz çok şey var. Peki bunu nasıl yapıyoruz, çözümleri nasıl buluyoruz, kararları nasıl veriyoruz?
Hayatımın uzun bir dönemi boyunca karar vermek konusunda zorlanmışımdır. Üniversitedeyken bile doğru zamanda doğru kararı vermek adına bir dünya ders aldım mesela. Bugün ise bir gün içinde onlarca kararı çok rahat alabiliyorum. Çünkü en büyük yardımcım -belki de Trendyol’da en sevdiğim şey- sayın “Data”. Data’yla konuşmak bize her zaman çok büyük fayda sağlıyor, bazen kendisini anlamak zor olsa da her zaman yanı başımızda ve bize ilerlememiz için hep bir ipucu veriyor. Çok iyi biri ve biz Trendyol olarak ona çok saygı duyuyoruz.
Datayla aranız iyi olduğunda hem kullanıcılarınızın ne istediğini daha iyi anlıyorsunuz hem de bir geliştirme yapacağınız zaman kaç adımda yapmalısınız, nerede durmalısınız, bunları görüyorsunuz. Biz sürekli gelişmek istediğimiz için, her zaman bulunduğumuz A noktasındayken ulaşmak istediğimiz bir B noktası var. A’dan B’ye gitmenin ise birçok farklı yolu olabilir. Hayalimizdeki B noktasının ise gerçekten kullanıcımızın ihtiyaç duyduğu şey olup olmadığını oraya ulaşmadan bilemeyiz. Örneğin aylarca büyük bir inançla çalıştık ve B’ye vardık, ama gördük ki kullanıcılarımız bunu istemiyor, yanlış yapmışız, istedikleri B değilmiş. Gitti o kadar emek! Ama merak etmeyin, bu durumla karşılaşmamak için de çözümümüz var: İterasyon ve tabii ki data. Peki nasıl yapıyoruz?
Öncelikle güncel durumdaki en temel iyileştirme gereken alanı seçiyoruz. Gerekli iyileştirmeyi yapıp A1 versiyonumuzu kullanıcılara sunuyoruz. Doğru yolda olup olmadığımızı A/B test datalarını detaylı analiz ederek anlamaya çalışıyoruz. Her şey yolundaysa A2 versiyonu ile devam ediyoruz ve B’ye yaklaşıyoruz. Fakat kullanıcılarımız A1’den memnun olmadıysa, en önemli kısmı düzeltmeden A2 ile devam etmiyor, nerede yanlış yaptığımızı anlıyor ve ona uygun bir formül bulup en başından doğru şekilde ilerlemeye çalışıyoruz. Bu iterasyonlar sonucunda ilk hayalimiz B çoğu zaman B+ versiyonuna dönüşüyor ve bunu kullanıcılarımız ile birlikte yapmış oluyoruz. Her iterasyonda onları daha iyi anlıyor, emin adımlarla C, D… versiyonlarına ilerleyebiliyoruz.
Anlatmaya çalıştığım biçimde iş yapmak, sürekli düşünmemizi ve işleyen demir gibi ışıldamamızı sağlıyor. Bu süreçleri uyguladığımız ve fark yarattığımız alanlar da gün geçtikçe artıyor.
